Summary

Nurse Assessor / Functional Assessor – Hybrid
Location: Reading
Salary: £45,300 to £48,000 plus approval bonus, performance bonus and benefits
Contract: Full time or part time, permanent. Monday to Friday.

We are recruiting Registered Nurses and other registered healthcare professionals for a hybrid Functional Assessor role based in Reading. This role offers stable weekday working, structured assessments and a clear move away from shift work and hands‑on clinical care.

The position is suited to clinicians who want to continue using their clinical knowledge and professional judgement in an assessment‑focused role, without nights, weekends or on‑call commitments. Both full‑time and part‑time hours are available.

About the role
As a Functional Assessor, you will complete structured assessments to determine how a person’s physical or mental health condition affects their ability to carry out everyday activities. Assessments are delivered via telephone, video or face‑to‑face, using secure digital systems and standardised clinical frameworks.
You will review medical evidence, conduct structured clinical conversations and produce clear, objective and evidence‑based written reports. These reports directly support formal disability benefit decision‑making.
There is no hands‑on treatment, no prescribing and no manual handling. All appointments are pre‑booked, with sufficient time allocated for each assessment. There is no diary management or scheduling responsibility.

Working pattern
This is a hybrid role combining home working with attendance at the Reading assessment centre. Onsite attendance is typically two days per week. Working hours are office hours, Monday to Friday, with flexibility for part‑time arrangements.

Eligibility
Applicants must be registered with one of the following professional bodies: NMC as an RGN, RMN or RNLD; HCPC as a Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist or Paramedic; or GPhC as a Pharmacist. A minimum of 12 months post‑registration experience is required. You must be confident in clinical reasoning, professional communication, report writing and daily use of IT systems.
You must have the right to work in the UK. Sponsorship is not available.

Pay and benefits
The salary range is £45,300 to £48,000 per year, depending on background and experience. An approval bonus of £1,000 to £2,000 is available, alongside an annual performance bonus of up to 10 percent. Benefits include 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays, pro‑rata for part‑time staff, with the option to buy or sell leave. You will receive four CPD days per year, ongoing clinical coaching, paid professional registration fees, a pension scheme with up to 6 percent employer contribution, employee discounts and access to wellbeing and mental health support services.
