Our Area
South Cumbria CYPMHS covers a large geographical area that includes the towns of Kendal, Ulverston and Barrow-in-Furness, as well as the surrounding countryside and coastal areas. As a result, our patch covers both rural and urban areas, with diverse needs in the local population.
If you come and work with us, you will be close to the stunning landscape of the Lake District and the beautiful Morecambe Bay. Many of our staff enjoy outdoor pursuits in their leisure time, including walking, fell-running, cycling, horse-riding, climbing or wild swimming. We take pleasure from being able to spend time outside in nature, knowing that it benefits our mental and physical well-being.
Alfred Barrow Health Centre, where the team is based in Barrow-in-Furness, is within walking distance of the train station, which has good transport links to other areas. For example, there are direct trains to Lancaster, Preston and Manchester.
The people of South Cumbria are friendly and welcoming. There is a clinical psychology doctoral training course based at Lancaster University, which means we benefit from having local trainee clinical psychologists on placement with us.
Our Community
We have a number of resources in the local community for children and adolescents, with dedicated professionals and volunteers working to offer young people a chance to thrive. Direct mental health work with young people is only one part of a bigger picture of their recovery. We work with young people, and their parents / carers, to ensure that they are linked in to other opportunities within their local community.
Our Team
We are a supportive CYPMH team comprising the team leaders, clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and a GP with an Extended Role, senior CAMHS practitioners, CAMHS practitioners, CBT therapists, systemic family therapist, DBT therapist, triage workers and assistant practitioners. Supervision will be offered by an experienced clinical psychologist. We have a clinical psychologist who is currently studying for a further qualification in neuropsychology. There is the opportunity to receive therapy-specific supervision, where needed. The Trust has a group for newly qualified clinical psychologists, which meets regularly.
