The Risk & Performance Business Partner plays a critical role at the centre of the Department, supporting Departmental Committees, Directors General, Directors, Group Boards and senior stakeholders to make informed decisions based on high quality performance and risk insight.

You will act as a trusted adviser and ‘critical friend’, providing constructive challenge, ensuring governance standards are upheld, and helping the Department deliver against its strategic priorities.

This role covers both risk and performance, and works closely with Performance Leads, Risk Leads, Group PMOs, and external partners across the wider DfT family.

You will work across the team, helping to continuously improve the risk and performance maturity of the Department.

Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Insight, Reporting & Governance

Have in-depth knowledge of delivery and risk challenges across the Department, to enable you to:

  • Lead the production of high quality risk and performance insight for DG Groups, Group Boards, ExCo and the Group Audit & Risk Assurance Committee (GARAC), ensuring senior decisionmakers have the right information at the right time.
  • Present insight at Group Boards, supporting Directors General to challenge and guide their Directors on performance and risk issues.
  • Produce, quality assure and contribute to key corporate products such as the Strategic Plan, Annual Report & Accounts, and monthly/quarterly performance reports.
  • Support in the production of insight reports to ExCo, DfT Board, and sub-committees.
Business Partnering

Build strong partnerships across the Department to:

  • Provide constructive challenge to business areas — particularly on delivery, risks, mitigating actions, scoring and narrative quality - ensuring accuracy, consistency, and meaningful commentary.
  • Support directorates to strengthen their risk and performance maturity, embedding best practice across Groups.
  • Facilitate conversations that bring together delivery performance and risk context to generate stronger, integrated insight for senior leaders.
Data, Analysis & Digital Tools

Be able to work with large data sets to:

  • Analyse trends across departmental performance and risk data to identify actionable insights for ExCo and Boards.
  • Provide expertise on data visualisation, ensuring information is clear, intuitive, and supports effective decision making.
  • Support continuous improvement of DfT’s digital tools (currently largely Power BI and the Risk & Milestone App) to drive better insight and usability.
Partnership & Collaboration

Be seen as an expert in Risk Management and Performance Insight to:

  • Build strong working relationships with Group PMOs, Performance Leads, Risk Leads and analysts across DfT.
  • Support the wider Risk & Performance Reporting & Insights team as required, flexing to priorities across performance, risk, planning and assurance.
Continuous Improvement & Culture

Be able to lead on projects which:

  • Encourage creativity and innovation in reporting, analysis and team operations.
  • Help professionalise risk management across Groups, embedding improvements and supporting adoption of new standards, policies and frameworks.
  • Contribute to training and capability building across the department.
