Summary
“It made a big difference, just having someone there.” Person supported by Carr Gomm
As a Development Worker, you will support people in Oban to access the right alcohol and drug services before they reach crisis point. You will provide person-centred support, helping people overcome barriers, build confidence, and reconnect with their community.
Based in Oban, you will work on-site to strengthen local partnerships with community organisations, statutory services, and support networks, contributing to early intervention and shaping how services are delivered in Argyll & Bute.
About Us
Carr Gomm is a leading social care and community development charity supporting people across Scotland to live their best lives. In Argyll & Bute, our Housing Support Services support people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to secure housing or maintain their tenancy.
You will work with the local Alcohol and Drugs Partnership (ADP) based in Oban, to improve support for people experiencing problematic alcohol or drug use and those in recovery.
Who We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone motivated by making a difference and confident supporting people to live their best lives. You will have experience supporting people affected by alcohol or drug use, whether through community, outreach, or specialist services. Experience of local partnership working, and an understanding of recovery and support services, whether through professional or lived experience, is highly valued.
You will bring a combination of practical skills and personal qualities that help you connect with people and support them effectively. An SVQ 3 in Health and Social Care is desirable. In particular, you will:
Communicate clearly and build trust quickly
Be proactive, flexible, and solution-focused
Show creativity, resilience, and patience
Commit to person-centred, values-led support
You will be comfortable balancing immediate priorities while contributing to the longer-term goals of a pilot service.
This is a fixed term position with a 27 month contract for 30 hours per week. Expected working days will be Monday – Friday with the occasional need for overnight shifts and weekends.
Impact You Can Make
“The support I have received has been life changing – and I do not say that lightly. If I had not received the support I would not be where I am today. Through working with [Carr Gomm] I have gained confidence, have a higher self-esteem and a good sense of self worth”. – Charley, Person supported by Carr Gomm
Why Join Carr Gomm
You will be part of a supportive, forward-thinking organisation that invests in its people. You will have opportunities to shape how work is done through specialist working groups and the Futures innovation programme, within an organisation that proudly holds the LGBT Charter for inclusion.
You will also receive:
35 days holiday per year, rising to 40 days with service
Enhanced maternity, paternity, adoption, and sick leave
A Defined Contribution pension scheme, with incremental employer contributions
Access to the Carr Gomm App, including free physiotherapy, health coaching, and counselling
A free Blue Light Card, giving access to thousands of discounts
Credit union membership
