Summary
Brook Street are excited to be supporting the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) in their search for a Temporary Admin Officer.
APHA is an independent public body that receives funding from the government.
They safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit of the people, the environment and the economy. Their key functions are many, but include:
- Identifying and controlling animal and plant diseases and pests
- Conducting scientific research
- Regulating the safe disposal of animal by-products
Key Details :
Temporary - Till the end of May 2026 to cover for staff, unable to accommodate any pre-booked holidays
Hourly rate - £12.98, paid weekly in arrears
Location - Exeter, 100% in the office initially, with a view to working, 3 days in the office once established
Hours of work - 37hrs - Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm
Start date - as soon as you are compliant
The role:
You will be working in a friendly and supportive team in a fast paced, reactive and varied role. You will need to have good IT and organisation skills and the flexibility to turn your hand to different tasks as the situation demands. The role involves regular engagement with colleagues across APHA, as well as delivery partners, stakeholders, and external customers. You will be handling sensitive financial data, so the role is well suited to someone with a good understanding of financial processes, excellent attention to detail, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of accuracy and confidentiality.
Main Duties to include but not limited to:
- Take ownership of designated administrative procedures, ensuring actions are completed accurately and on time.
- Provide administrative and business support to the immediate team and, when required, the wider team, including attending meetings, training sessions, and monitoring shared mailboxes.
- Handle telephone queries, resolving issues where possible and conducting follow‑up actions where needed.
- Record call details accurately, liaise with the public, and follow established administration processes.
- Provide support and guidance to colleagues and external customers on procedures, following up queries that cannot be immediately resolved.
- The role may include discussions related to the removal of diseased animals from farms for slaughter.
- General adhoc administrative duties
Essential Skills:
- Excellent organisational skills
- Experience of working with Microsoft Suite, particularly Excel and Sharepoint
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with both internal and external stakeholders
- Integrity and confidentiality as handling sensitive personal and financial data
- Administrative and customer service
- Good eye for detail and high level of accuracy for processing high-value compensation settlements
Training will be provided on the various systems but you will have full working knowledge of Microsoft Suite, particularly Excel and Sharepoint.
Parking is available on site and close to good transport links, including Digby and Sowton train station and M5.
You will be required to pass compliance which will involve you providing the details for 3 years referencing and passing a Basic DBS.
