Summary


The Integrated & Specialist Medicine (ISM) Clinical Group is seeking an innovative, collaborative and highly skilled Head of Business Intelligence to lead our analytics capability and drive data‑enabled improvement across eight diverse directorates.

We are looking for a compassionate, motivated and forward‑thinking leader who can bring strategic insight, technical credibility and positive energy to this pivotal role. You will lead our established Engine Roomanalytics function and play a central role in shaping how the Clinical Group uses data to drive clinical excellence, operational performance and improvement. The Head of Business Intelligence is accountable to the Director of Operations & Partnerships and works closely with the Clinical Group CEO, Executive Team and senior clinical leads. Your responsibilities include:
• Providing strategic and operational leadership for all analytics and reporting activity across ISM.
• Leading and developing the Business Intelligence and Engine Room Clinical Analytics teams.
• Overseeing statutory national submissions and ensuring the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of ISM data.
• Translating complex data into meaningful insight to support service improvement, business planning and clinical governance.
• Advising senior leaders on analytical methodologies, performance trends and the impact of change.
• Driving forward innovation in predictive analytics, dashboarding and data quality.
• Representing the Clinical Group in trust‑wide digital programmes, including EHR development and data governance.

The ideal candidate will bring strong analytical leadership, confident communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a complex, multi‑professional environment.

The ISM Clinical Group is one of four Clinical Groups at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and includes services such as Acute & General Medicine, Specialist Ambulatory & Medical Specialties, Clinical Imaging & Medical Physics, Pharmacy, Dental and Integrated & Local Services. You will work closely with a supportive Executive Team comprising the CEO, Medical Director, Director of Nursing, People Director, Head of Finance and Directors of Operations & Partnership.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential:
• Master’s degree or equivalent senior‑level experience.
• Evidence of continuous professional development.

Desirable:
• Professional membership (e.g., IHRIM, APHA).
• Experience in a large, complex NHS organisation.

Previous Experience

Essential:
• Extensive leadership experience in large, complex organisations.
• Proven success delivering analytics‑enabled service improvement or transformation.
• Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and significant budgets.
• Demonstrable understanding of NHS strategy, policy, performance and digital systems.

Desirable:
• Experience upskilling teams in analytics or improvement methodologies.
• Expertise in digital transformation, agile approaches or user‑centred design.

Skills / Knowledge / Ability

Essential:
• Highly developed analytical and judgement skills.
• Knowledge of business intelligence, predictive analytics, data governance and NHS data systems.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing ability at senior levels.
• Ability to work flexibly, manage competing priorities and lead teams through change.
• Advanced ability in dashboarding, SQL or analytical modelling and data visualisation.
• Commitment to partnership working, inclusion and service improvement.
