As Resident Medical Officer, you’ll play a crucial role providing on call cover for Cygnet Kenney House. This is a hospital for women, located in Oldham. The services provide a safe and secure care pathway for women with mental health need and are now open.

The RMO is the doctor onsite covering on calls between 5pm and 9am and weekend shifts. Generally the RMO will work on a rota of 4 days on / 3 days off.

Cygnet Kenney House has collaborated with the NHS to develop services to support women from the North West to be treated closer to home. There are three wards at Cygnet Kenney House; Billington Ward, a 12 bed specialist Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Baldock Ward, a 16 bed Acute service and Harben Ward, a 16 bed mental health rehabilitation and recovery service.

The PICU and Acute environments offer rapid access to care, supporting women to move quickly and safely through to the most appropriate and least restrictive setting. The mental health rehabilitation and recovery ward (level 2) supports individuals moving on from the Acute ward, as well as external referrals from other services such as secure, CAMHS, and more.

Main duties and Responsibilities…

  • Assess all patients on admission by completing a thorough history and examination including physical examination.
  • Ensure physical health and mental health care of patients are being met with reviews with the nursing staff whilst on call.
  • Carry out physical examinations including ECGs & Bloods
  • Conduct risk assessments and mental health assessments for patients
  • Liaise with the Consultant Psychiatrists on call when necessary for advice.
  • Prescribe and review medication with the support of the Consultant Psychiatrist on call when required.
  • Be supervised by the Consultant Psychiatrist weekly to ensure training needs analysis and personal development plan.
  • Ensure the Responsible Clinician is kept updated in a timely manner regarding all clinical matters arising whilst on call by submitting appropriate handovers.
  • Liaise with all members of the MDT, GP’s, relatives and other professional agencies as needed.

We are looking for someone who is...

  • Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified
  • An excellent clinical decision maker, with sound judgement, the ability to manage risk & know when to ask for help
  • Preferably experienced in Psychiatry
  • Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • A first-rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients & write clear, comprehensive medical notes
  • Committed to continued professional development
