From HR to Finance, Policy to Communications, this is work that sustains and supports, where everyone’s voice is heard, and our customers are at the heart of everything we do.

For a career packed with possibility, a comprehensive benefits package, where we live by our values and have the opportunity to improve the lives of people across the UK, look no further.

Supporting people who need it most. That’s our purpose. Start your own career today.

This one-year placement is a fantastic opportunity to join one of Government’s finance functions. You will have the opportunity to consolidate your degree learning and gain valuable experience working in a finance role within a finance directorate.

DWP’s directorates are: Strategic Finance; Financial Management and Partnering; and Payments, Systems and Financial Control. You also benefit from a wide network of resources and experienced finance professionals who can support you on your journey to becoming a qualified finance professional. This role will lay the foundations for a rewarding career in government finance as an accountancy professional.

Successful students will also be part of a wider cohort of university students starting their placements at around the same time.

As a key member of the finance team, the postholder will undertake essential finance tasks to support the effective delivery of the team’s objectives. This will include:

  • Tracking how money is being spent, ensuring spend is within budget and identifying trends or patterns.
  • Helping to prepare simple financial reports, creating spreadsheets and creating charts or summaries that managers can quickly understand.
  • Supporting departmental planning and forecasting, helping to estimate how much money the business will need to deliver its objectives.
  • Learning how Government finance works, including developing an understanding of how public money is allocated, and the rules each department must follow.
  • Build and maintain key relationships, developing trust and managing the expectations of managers and stakeholders.
  • Provide timely, accurate and clearly communicated financial information and analysis to support decision making, in ways that non-finance people will understand.
  • Ensure effective support and advice to the business. Engage with other finance teams to identify and pursue opportunities for continuous improvement.

Gain confidence using the department’s financial systems and processes, sharing your expertise with others.

Hybrid working

This role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work.

If a hybrid working arrangement is suitable for the role and for you, you will normally be required to spend a minimum of 60% of your contracted working hours from your DWP office.

If you have a disability, caring responsibilities, or other circumstances that may affect your ability to meet the minimum office attendance requirement, please discuss this with us using the contact details in this advert.

Visa Sponsorship

Please note that these vacancies are not currently eligible for new applications for Visa Sponsorship on the Skilled Worker route, for any candidates who do not currently have permission to be in the UK as a Skilled Worker where they were sponsored before 4 April 2024, even if relying on tradeable points (including the new entrant tradeable points option) as they are not included in the published Immigration Salary List. This information is offered as guidance only, and we recommend that applicants seek specialist advice on their eligibility for Visa Sponsorship (if applicable) when considering whether to apply for any role.

Locations

Please note that for candidates requesting to work in Newcastle, this role will be based at Benton Park View from September 2025, and then at 1 Pilgrim Place in Newcastle city centre by the end of 2027.

Selection for appointment to the Civil Service is on merit and successful candidates will be posted in merit order, on the basis of fair and open competition, as outlined in the Civil Service Commission's Recruitment Principles here.
