Your new role
As a Lighting Consultant, you will deliver a range of technical lighting services, including environmental lighting impact assessments, light spill analysis, glare assessment, and daylight/sunlight/overshadowing modelling using professional software such as DIALux, AGi32, SketchUp or similar.
Key aspects of your role will include:
- Conducting site assessments and developing lighting design plans that meet regulatory, environmental and aesthetic requirements.
- Preparing robust technical reports for planning applications and EIAs, ensuring alignment with ILP/BS guidance and industry best.
- Reviewing third‑party lighting assessments and providing clear, unbiased feedback for local authorities and planning bodies.
- Presenting findings to clients, planners, and multi‑disciplinary stakeholders while guiding them through technical considerations.
- Managing multiple projects, budgets, timelines and client relationships concurrently.
You will work collaboratively with air quality, noise and planning specialists to integrate lighting solutions into broader environmental and development strategies.
What you'll need to succeed
To excel in this role, you will need:Technical Expertise
- Proven experience delivering lighting modelling and environmental lighting assessments, including daylight, sunlight and overshadowing studies..
- Proficiency with lighting simulation tools (e.g., DIALux, AGi32) and 3D modelling software (e.g., SketchUp, MBS).
- Strong understanding of lighting standards, environmental guidance, planning policy and sustainable lighting practices.
Professional Skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, structured technical reports and confidently present to stakeholders.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem‑solving ability, with attention to detail and sound professional judgement.
- Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings and translate them into effective lighting solutions.
- Project management capability, including resource planning, scheduling, client liaison and budget tracking.
- Strong business development skills are desirable.
Qualifications & Background
- Degree in Lighting Design, Engineering, Environmental Science, Architecture or a related field.
- Professional membership such as ILP or similar is highly desirable.
- Experience working on planning‑driven environmental projects, EIAs or design-led lighting roles.
