Summary

A Vacancy at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

A rare opportunity for a B6 Physiotherapist to work in our MSK Therapy Inpatient and Outpatients Orthopaedics department on a rotational basis.

The post will consist of the following caseload:

IP: You'll have the opportunity to manage inpatient elective orthopaedic and trauma patients.

OP: The outpatient caseload consists predominantly of referrals from orthopaedic and rheumatology consultants, emergency department presentations, staff self-referral and occupational health. The OP therapy dept includes treatment rooms, a large therapy gym and hydrotherapy pools.

You'll be working as part of the MSK and Orthopaedic Therapy teams as well as working closely with the wider MDT team. Our therapy team includes Physiotherapists, OTs, and Therapy support staff.

We provide a 7-day therapy service for our Trust and therefore you need to be able to work weekends and bank holidays, as part of a roster. For Physiotherapists this also includes our acute respiratory out of hours service (On-call), which means treating both adults and children with complex respiratory conditions, including intensive care, on a rostered basis.

This post is part of the wider Therapy services department. You will have many opportunities to develop new skills and knowledge through our in-service training. You will be part of a large department of over 300 Therapy staff including Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Therapy support staff, so will have peer support available to you.

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHSwe’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Who is this post suitable for?
We are looking for a dynamic Physiotherapist with both musculoskeletal knowledge and skills, who is highly motivated and keen to further develop their expertise in this area. You should have some prior outpatient or orthopaedic experience and excellent communication skills, be able to work effectively within a team and evidence your involvement in service improvement, teaching or audit, as well as have the relevant clinical experience.

As well as fulfilling the person specification, for this post you also need the following essential skills and experience:
• Robust postgraduate clinical experience working either in IP or OP MSK/orthopaedics
• Postgraduate training in MSK, or relevant subject
• Proven postgraduate experience in doing shifts within an acute respiratory on-call service, including adults and children
• Understanding of NHS system
• Clear, expressed reasoning for applying to work in this clinical speciality, and specifically within UHS Therapy services, on your application form

Desirable skills needed:
• Experience as a Physiotherapy student supervisor
• Experience of audit and evaluation

We are committed to providing any extra training and development required for the individual to achieve both competency and confidence in these areas. You will benefit from regular support and supervision from an experienced team of therapists up to, and including, Consultant Physiotherapists and will benefit from the well-established In-service training programme.

Please email: Jacqui.Tomkins@uhs.nhs.uk to ask any questions you may have.

Please note:
1. Interviews will be held in person, face to face on Thursday 9th April 2026 and will include a practical component, so please consider this when applying as no virtual option will be given.
2. No CV applications will be accepted

Specific to this role we are open to discussing flexibility in the hours that you work. Please talk to us at interview about the flexibility you need, and we will explore what’s possible for the role and service.
