Summary
Equans is looking for an Power BI Optimisation Lead to join our team in on a 12 month fixed term contract basis. This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week. As a lead within the BI Support team, you’ll lead efforts to standardise and streamline Power BI deployments, proactively monitor capacity usage, and introduce innovative tooling to support smarter reporting. Your expertise will be vital in shaping best practices, coaching developers, and enabling a well-governed, scalable reporting environment that empowers decision-makers across the business. What will you deliver? Capacity & Strategic GovernanceLead proactive monitoring and auditing of Power BI model performance, refresh cycles, and resource utilisation to ensure optimal system health.Define enterprise-wide benchmarks and publishing protocols to safeguard against inefficient deployments.Architect and implement breach detection frameworks with automated alerting for mission-critical models.Enterprise Model OptimisationDrive strategic remediation of underperforming datasets and workspaces, aligning with business priorities.Champion standardised model architecture to minimise refresh overhead and eliminate duplication across reporting layers.Orchestrate centralised data sourcing strategies to streamline queries and elevate performance at scale.Tooling Innovation & AutomationEvaluate and deploy AI-powered extensions and third-party solutions to accelerate model optimisation and reduce manual intervention.Spearhead the integration of support applications that enhance delivery velocity and operational efficiencyStrategic Technology EnablementAssess and pilot emerging technologies (e.g., Direct Lake, SQL DB instances) to future-proof data infrastructure.Design refresh segmentation strategies to mitigate peak load and improve system responsiveness.Best Practice LeadershipDevelop and embed reusable model templates and modular design frameworks to foster consistency and scalability.Establish cross-functional communities of practice to embed Power BI optimisation standards across teams.Promote a culture of self-service analytics through scalable, user-friendly model design. Strong expertise in Power BI architecture, capacity planning, and performance tuningProficient in DAX, Power Query, and data modelling best practicesExperience with monitoring tools (e.g., Capacity Metrics App) and alerting systemsFamiliarity with emerging technologies like Direct Lake and AI-driven optimisationAbility to translate technical insights into business value and strategic recommendationsProven track record of driving cost savings and operational efficiency in BI environmentsFlexible approach with the ability to change priorities at short notice and to manage large workloads and deadlinesExperience in Power BI development and optimisation, including model design, performance tuning, and capacity managementDemonstrated success in reducing infrastructure costs and improving report performance through strategic model architectureHands-on experience auditing Power BI environments, identifying inefficiencies, and implementing scalable solutionsFamiliarity with Power BI Premium capacity metrics, refresh diagnostics, and workspace governanceExperience collaborating with BI teams to embed best practices and coach junior developersTrack record of introducing innovative tooling and automation to streamline BI deliveryExposure to alternative technologies such as Direct Lake, SQL DB instances, and AI-driven optimisation toolsExpert stakeholder engagement across technical and business teams, with the ability to translate complex insights into actionable recommendationsExperience leading or contributing to communities of practice and driving adoption of BI standards across an organisationWho are we?
