Summary

About the Client
Preston City Council delivers a wide range of civic and ceremonial functions, supporting the Mayor in representing the city at official engagements, community events and formal occasions. The Mayoral Office plays a key role in upholding civic tradition, ensuring professionalism, protocol and high‑quality public representation.
The Role
The Mayoral Officer will act as driver, attendant and assistant to the Mayor and Deputy Mayor, supporting them at civic events, formal engagements and public appearances. This is a highly visible role requiring diplomacy, confidence, excellent communication skills and a smart, professional appearance. Duties include chauffeuring, event support, managing civic regalia, assisting with robing, and providing administrative and hospitality support.
The role requires flexibility, including evening and weekend work, and the ability to carry the ceremonial mace during processions.
Key Responsibilities
Act as chauffeur and attendant to the Mayor/Deputy Mayor at civic events.
Assist with organising and managing civic functions, including greeting guests and explaining protocol.
Ensure the security, presentation and correct handling of mayoral chains, regalia and insignia.
Assist with robing and preparing the Mayor for engagements.
Support councillors and guests during major civic occasions.
Make formal announcements when required.
Maintain the mayoral vehicle, ensuring it is roadworthy, clean and compliant.
Maintain the Mayor’s Parlour, including regalia, silver, art and collectables.
Provide basic catering and hospitality support.
Carry the ceremonial mace during processions.
Provide administrative support as needed.
Work flexibly, including evenings and weekends, wearing the appropriate uniform.
Candidate Requirements
Good standard of education.
Excellent communication skills with confidence and sensitivity when dealing with civic leaders, elected members and the public.
Commanding presence with the ability to manage processions and make formal announcements.
Confident, tactful and diplomatic at all times.
Full UK driving licence; safe and confident driver.
Ability to maintain and check the civic vehicle.
Smart appearance and willingness to wear uniform.
Ability to carry the ceremonial mace for extended periods.
Flexible approach to working hours.
Experience in a similar role desirable but not essential.
