Casual Caretaker (Zero-Hours / Ad-Hoc basis)
Patcham High School is seeking to appoint a reliable and proactive Casual Caretaker to support the safe and effective use of the school site outside of normal school hours on a zero-hours, ad-hoc basis.
This role is primarily focused on opening and securing the site, site security, customer liaison, and health and safety compliance when the school premises are hired by external users. The successful candidate will frequently be working alone, so confidence, initiative and the ability to respond appropriately to situations as they arise are essential.
Main duties will include:
• Unlocking and locking the school site for lettings and events
• Acting as a key holder for the premises
• Supervising and supporting customers who have hired school facilities
• Carrying out site security patrols during lettings
• Completing basic health and safety compliance checks and reporting any issues
• Responding to incidents or emergencies and escalating concerns where necessary
• Ensuring the site is left secure and in good order following use
Previous experience in caretaking, facilities, security or a customer-facing role would be desirable but is not essential, as training will be provided.
The successful candidate will:
• Be reliable, responsible and trustworthy
• Be confident working independently and using their own initiative
• Have good interpersonal and communication skills
• Be calm, professional and approachable when dealing with members of the public
• Have an awareness of health and safety requirements
• Be flexible and available to work evenings and weekends as required
Hours and pay:
This is a zero-hours, casual role, with hours offered on an as-required basis to cover school lettings, events and occasional absences. Work is typically at weekends and evenings, with weekend shifts usually between 8.00am and 2.00pm, although this may vary depending on school activities.
Pay will be in line with LGA Pay Scale 4b, Point 11–12 currently £14.59 per hour (FTE £28,142 per annum pro rata).
If you enjoy working independently, have a strong sense of responsibility and would like to support the school and wider community, we would welcome your application.
Application forms can be downloaded from the school website:
http://www.patchamhigh.brighton-hove.sch.uk/school-information-2/vacancies/
Alternatively, please call 01273 503908 for an application pack.

Patcham High School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.
