LANCASTER UNIVERSITY COLLEGE AT BEIJING JIAOTONG UNIVERSITY (Shandong, China)

Full time English and Study Skills Tutor/s – to commence from August 2026

Salary: £33,002 - £37,694 depending on qualifications and experience

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a joint institute between Lancaster University and Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU). The campus is located in a remote seaside town one hour south of Weihai city in Eastern Shandong province, and situated within the ‘Nanhai New District’ along the Southern coastline of the Shandong peninsula. The campus and neighbouring community is situated in an area with a fast-growing reputation for clean air, golden beaches and ecological parkland. The campus is served by an adjacent bus station, as well as a high speed railway station connecting Nanhai to Qingdao in 90 minutes. Weihai airport, which connects domestically and internationally, is less than an hour away.

Following a period of probation, you will be employed on an indefinite contract and be based on the campus in China for two semesters, which are of 18 weeks duration. There will be a provision for furnished accommodation in China, international expatriate medical cover, two return flights and enrolment on a UK pension scheme included in the remuneration package. The accommodation is conveniently located near the teaching campus with amenities nearby.

The individual appointed will have the opportunity to teach on our English and Study Skills modules, which is part a four-year degree programme for Chinese students, leading to a dual award from both institutions. There are four modules, spread over two years. The crucial first year of the degree course prepares our Chinese students for entry into the second year of their chosen degree courses at the joint institute, where there are six pathways: Computing, Art & Design, Communications Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Accounting & Finance and Business Studies.

Main duties of this role are to deliver student-centred classes incorporating opportunities for developing independent learning skills; to create supplementary relevant teaching materials, to provide learner support; to evaluate learning through a range of assessment methods, and to keep up-to-date records as required by Lancaster University. Teaching will be conducted face-to-face in China.

Applicants should have TESOL/CELTA qualifications with recent experience of teaching English for Academic Purposes in a variety of international settings. Post graduate teaching qualifications (MA TESOL/ or DELTA) are highly desirable. Candidates will be expected to have tutorial experience, working in both large and small group settings.

Experience of teaching international students, ideally Chinese students, plus proficiency in the use of interactive technologies is essential. Successful candidates must be available to commence in the role by the latest 10 August 2026. This role is subject to being able to obtain suitable visa documentation prior to the first deployment to China. Employment is regulated by the Chinese Labour Laws. These regulations stipulate who is eligible for legal employment with regard to obtaining work permits and visas. Please be advised that candidates over Chinese retirement age may not be eligible for a work visa in Weihai.

The modules to be covered are taught for up to 18 hours per week with additional tutorial hours.
