Contract: 1-year fixed term contract with the view of making the role permanent at the end of the contract

Start Date: 1st September 2026

Salary: MPS/UPS Payment for additional responsibility: TLR2 – £5,808 pro rata per annum

Job Purpose

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and forward-thinking English teacher who is ready to take the next step in their leadership journey. The Deputy Curriculum Area Leader of English will work in close partnership with the Curriculum Area Leader to shape the future direction of English, driving innovation, raising standards, and ensuring an exceptional learning experience for all students.

The role is ideal for a reflective practitioner with strong ideas about curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment, who is eager to make a tangible impact across the department while continuing to develop as a leader.

Leadership and Management

• Work collaboratively with the Curriculum Area Leader to lead, develop, and sustain a clear departmental vision
• Take on shared responsibility for departmental improvement planning and self-evaluation
• Inspire and support colleagues through modelling high expectations and effective practice
• Contribute confidently to leadership discussions and decision-making within the department
• Ensuring staff are maintaining high T&L and curriculum standards, aligning with whole school priorities
• Deputise for the Curriculum Area Leader when required

Curriculum and Teaching

• Contribute to the design, implementation, and refinement of an ambitious and engaging English curriculum
• Ensuring an English and Drama curriculum that meets the needs of the learners with adhering to the requirements of the National Curriculum and any additional national changes.
• Champion innovative approaches to teaching and learning informed by research and best practice
• Support colleagues in delivering high-quality, inclusive, and challenging lessons

• Support staff in dealing effectively with student behaviour in order to remove any barriers that hinder progress
• Model outstanding classroom practice and a passion for English

Assessment and Progress

• Support the development of consistent, purposeful assessment practices across the department
• Monitor timely submission and use of assessment data
• Use assessment and progress data to inform teaching, intervention, and curriculum refinement
• Work with the Curriculum Area Leader to identify priorities and strategies for raising attainment
• Support departmental monitoring and quality assurance processes

Professional Development

• Play an active role in developing others through coaching, mentoring, and collaboration in line with whole-school initiatives
• Contribute to a culture of professional learning, reflection, and shared practice
• Engage proactively in leadership development opportunities and CPD
• Support early career teachers and trainee teachers within the department

Person Specification

Essential

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
• Strong subject knowledge and enthusiasm for English education
• An enthusiasm for curriculum improvement
• Successful teaching experience at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4
• Evidence of impact on student outcomes and engagement
• A reflective, proactive approach to improving teaching and learning
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills
• A student focussed approach to decision making
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children

Desirable

• Experience contributing to departmental leadership or innovation
• Knowledge of both Eduqas and AQA English specifications
• Knowledge / experience of GCSE Drama
• Experience of curriculum design
• Experience supporting or mentoring colleagues
• Aspiration for continued professional development
