Summary
We are looking to recruit a motivated Senior Clinical Fellow in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM).
This post is available from 5th August 2026 for 12 months and is not recognised for PHEM subspecialty training. The role may be eligible to count towards emergency medicine higher specialty training time as an OOP-T in negotiation with your own training deaneryif applicable.
This exciting new post is aimed at providing training and experience in pre-hospital emergency medicine, alongside working as a Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine within a DGH Emergency Department.
The job is designed to be an enjoyable, CV-enhancing post attracting high calibre candidates.
The Emergency Department and Urgent Treatment Centre sees approximately 200,000 attendances per year.
The department has a 6-bay resuscitation area, a 16-bay majors trolley area, an ambulatory majors area, a minor theatre, a plaster room and a 4 bedded observation area. Recently the integrated front door project has delivered a newbuild Urgent Treatment Centre, Emergency Department and Children’s Emergency Unit with a dedicated Resus, High Care, and Majors and Ambulatory areas.
50% of the post will be in-hospital Emergency Medicine allowing an opportunity for doctors wanting to gain experience and responsibility in not just managing patients but managing a busy department.
We are a busy DGH Emergency Department and Trauma Unit that sees a wide variety of presentations (in both adult and paediatric). We deal with medical, surgical, orthopaedic, paediatric and trauma patients. These patients can present and be assessed in resus, majors, minors or paediatric ED.
This successful applicant will work as a Senior Registrar (Tier 4 Clinician) in the Emergency Department with responsibility for Emergency patient assessment, stabilisation and treatment, and onward referral as appropriate.
They will be expected to run the emergency department in the role of Emergency Physician in Charge, supported by a non-resident oncall consultant overnight.

Emergency Medicine (50%):
50% of the post will be Emergency Medicine clinical care allowing doctors to develop in not just managing patients, but managing the department.

We deal with medical, surgical, orthopaedic, paediatric and trauma patients. These patients can present and be assessed in resus, majors, minors or paediatric ED. The successful applicant will be expected to see patients across these areas as required.
· Ensure safe and timely emergency patient care
· Prescribe safely
· Keep an accurate and relevant medical record (electronic notes)
· Manage time and clinical priorities effectively
· Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues
· Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care
· Teach peers and junior colleagues, as well as medical students attached to the department.
· Act as Emergency Physician in Charge (EPIC) in the Emergency Department, including overnight supported by a consultant non-resident oncall.
· Engage in Quality Improvement activity to improve processes and patient care within the department.
Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (50%):
SCFs joining us will be supported to complete the National PHEM Induction course, complete a period of fully supervised practice before then going on to remote supervised practice with a minimum 20% Consultant supervised shifts. SCFs will be encouraged to attend the national PHEM training days and appropriate courses and study days relevant to the specialty. SCFs will be expected to maintain a portfolio of workplace-based assessments, cases and reflections to mirror the educational practice of nationally recruited IBTPHEM trainees, with the intent of supporting doctors to gather the evidence necessary to apply for eligibility to sit the Fellowship in Immediate Medical Care examination in the future.
Our current shift system is centred on a day shift (0800-1800) and a late/night shift (1700-0300) at our Semington base, with clinical governance days on a monthly basis (0900-1700). The rota is written on a quarterly basis, and supports self-rostering practices so long as supervised shift quota expectations are achieved.
SCFs, whilst primarily being employed by GWH, will be expected to comply with the policies and procedures of our region’s ambulance service (South West Ambulance Service NHS Trust) with whom you will have an Honorary Contract, and WABA, with whom you will also have a contract. There is the expectation that study days will also be used to complete mandatory annual training requirements for the aforementioned such as Aviation, Fire Safety, Major Incident and Medical Advisor training (this list is not exhaustive).
At WABA, the clinical team are co-located with our charity staff, and PHEM Fellows will also be expected to support and engage with the charity and our stakeholders as representatives of WABA.
Main duties and responsibilities:
· To work as a trainee Critical Care Doctor at WABA (and on an Honorary basis for SWAST) providing pre-hospital emergency medical care includingweekends/bank-holidays/night shifts
· To engage withtrainers,educational supervisor(s) and medical director
· Attend regional training days for EM and regional/national training days in PHEM
· Comply with training requirements that mirror the IBTPHEM national training programme
· Maintain a portfolio in line with the IBTPHEM curriculum requirements
· Complete the DipIMC examination(if not already held)
· Progress towards the FIMC eligibility certificate and subsequent examination
· Attend and participateinWABA’s clinical governance meetings
· Contribute toWABA’s organisational development through audit, quality improvement andproject work
· Comply with all policies and procedures ofWABA and SWASTrespectively
· Support the ongoing development ofSWAST seconded APCCs at WABA
· Work in conjunction with SWAST personnel under the auspices of WABA to deliver education, training and mentoring.
· Work as part of a multidisciplinary team
· Participate in and support SWASFT clinical governance.
· Where appropriate, provide enhanced medical skills.
· Actively participate in the delivery of education and development of enhanced pre-hospital care.
· Maintain an understanding JRCALC and SWASFT clinical guidelines and be aware when operating out side of these guidelines.
