Minimum experience: Must have completed MRCEM (members by examination), as well as having NHS experience.
The Emergency Department is based at Hull Royal Infirmary and is the major Emergency Department serving
the districts of Hull and East Yorkshire, being one of the largest departments by attendance in the UK. The
department receives patients from the South Bank of the River Humber. The total population covered is
approximately 600,000. Hull Royal Infirmary is the Major Trauma Centre for East Yorkshire and Northern
Lincolnshire. The ED is a regional Paediatric Trauma Unit.
There are over 130,000 attendances annually making it one of the busiest EDs and is graded as a Large ED
as per the Royal College of Emergency Medicine description. The department has a close working
relationship with the physician led Acute Assessment Unit, which lies adjacent to the department. Extensive
adjacent radiological support is shared by the Emergency Department and the Acute Assessment Unit,
including two spiral CT scanners, MRI, ultrasound and plain radiology service. The radiology department
supports the diagnostic service with consultant support during working hours in radiology and neuroradiology,
and specialist registrar support 24-hours a day. There is also an Ambulatory Care Unit (SDEC) which accepts
medical patients from the Emergency Department and from Primary Care. There is a Surgical Assessment
Unit on the surgical floor.
Working as a trust grade registrar in our ED you will be expected to perform at the level of a RCEM
registrar in training. You will join the registrar rota and be a senior decision maker, working in all areas to
provide safe patient care, enhanced team working and leadership. This involves supporting juniors, offering
advice and reviews, seeing time critical patients in a timely and concise manner, reviewing the sickest
patients in the department and liaising with other specialties to ensure patients are seen by the right team
at the right time.
The skill level should be that of a tier 4 clinician as defined by RCEM (ST4+ and above) with anaesthetic
and paediatric competences, as well as major trauma experience.
As well a clinical duties, there will be opportunities for education (department and self-led) with built in study
time, as well as opportunities to take part in research and QIP work. A supervisor provided to support with
projects and general concerns.
