Summary
Scientific duties To perform a wide range of neurophysiology investigations on both inpatients and outpatients, adapting where necessary the technique and to accommodate clinical state of the patient (psychological, emotional and aggressive behaviours, and the degree of patient co-operation (such as intellectualdisabilities, challenging behaviours and neurodiversity). To assist the consultant neurophysiologists in their EMG clinics. To gain written and verbal consent for procedures performed. To gain written consent for the use of ambulatory/telemetry equipment and consequences due to loss or damage of this equipment. To offer advice to patients on leaving the department if they are found to be photosensitive toreduce the risk of further epileptic seizures To advise patients of the necessary precautions to take following sleep deprivation to reduce the risk of further seizures. To provide verbal and written information regarding the after effects of sedation prior to the patient leaving the department following a sedation EEG. Explain the after effects and side effects of EMG investigation including for patients on blood thinners and advice on what to do in an emergency. To work within departmental policies and procedures but have the ability to adapt working practices to perform accurate and reliable investigations under pressure and at speed should an emergency or need arise. To have the ability to adjust parameters and settings of equipment to reflect recording conditions and difficulties. Person specific Allocate appointments in appropriate clinics, at appropriate clinic sites and time slots. To provide end of month salary and investigation data and send to the appropriate department or person. To co-ordinate arrangements for sedation procedures on the ward with the ward, patient and referringConsultant. Obtain additional medical information relevant to the investigation from the appropriate source. Produce and verify neurophysiology reports to issue to the referring clinicians. Triage referrals received by the department. Discuss and advise referring medical staff of the appropriateness of requested investigations and make relevant suggestions. To prioritise incoming referral during the absence of consultant colleagues using the triaging protocols. Managerial and additional duties To act in a supervisory, mentor and advisory capacity with regard to the work of the department and its staff. To monitor and approve staff holidays, absence and sickness following the relevant trust policies andProcedures. To be the first line triage all referrals coming into the department. To oversee the training of all staff including trainees, apprentices, work experience personnel and medicalstudents. To act as line manager for the updating of computer access/mandatory training and induction of staff. To assist in the training of clinical physiologists to the required ANS/BSCN standards, to act as a work basedAssessor and represent them and the department accordingly. Take an active role in revising and updating departmental policies and procedures as necessary. To cover duties as necessary across all departmental sites when necessary. Monitor and supervise the ordering of goods and services and be an authorised signatory for these ordersas necessary. Maintain appropriate service contracts for all equipment, renew and engage in the booking of the services etc. To take an active role in audit, research and development. To act as audit convenor and lead for all audits affecting neurology and neurophysiology. To share information at governance and ensure timely completion. To be available for the governance meetings to share the relevant audit information. To act as safeguarding and health and safety lead for the department
