Summary
To undertake the role of Team Leader, assuming ongoing responsibility for effective room management and the smooth, efficient running of theatre lists. This includes the appropriate deployment, coordination, and supervision of staff within the department to ensure safe, high‑quality patient care. The post‑holder will provide teaching, guidance, and supervision to pre‑registration students, unqualified staff, registered nurses, Operating Department Practitioners, non‑clinical personnel, and patients, supporting their development and promoting a positive learning environment
Main Duties and Responsibilities
•
Maintain a safe, controlled, and supportive environment for all patients undergoing surgical procedures within the department, ensuring that high standards of perioperative care are consistently upheld.

Provide clinical and professional leadership as the lead member of the theatre team, offering expert advice and supporting colleagues in delivering safe and effective practice.
•
Act as a visible role model, leading the team with professionalism and confidence while providing skilled assistance to the surgical team across a range of procedures.
•
Take managerial responsibility for an allocated theatre area, coordinating staff, liaising with relevant disciplines, and offering specialist advice to ensure smooth and efficient service delivery.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES
•
Deliver high‑quality, evidence‑based perioperative care in accordance with the NMC/HCPC Code of Professional Conduct and Trust policies.
•
Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised patient care, ensuring a holistic approach
throughout the perioperative pathway.
•
Provide skilled and competent scrub assistance to the surgical team, ensuring safe practice, aseptic technique, and adherence to local and Trust guidelines.
•
Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and timely patient documentation, reviewing and updating records as required.
•
Ensure the safe custody, administration, and documentation of medicines in line with Trust policy, reporting discrepancies immediately.
•
Promote and maintain a safe environment for patients and staff, demonstrating knowledge of resuscitation, fire safety, infection control, and moving and handling procedures.
•
Coordinate patient care with other clinical disciplines to ensure that total care needs are identified and met.
•
Maintain the cleanliness, readiness, and safe functioning of equipment and the theatre environment, escalating faults promptly.
•
Participate in the on‑call rota, weekend duties, and flexible working patterns to support service delivery.
•
Contribute to patient education and health promotion, ensuring patients and families receive appropriate information and support.
•
Apply current research and best practice to continuously improve clinical standards within the theatre environment.
EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
•
Promote a positive, work‑based learning environment that supports the development of all staff.
•
Facilitate the education, supervision, and assessment of pre‑registration students, newly appointed staff, bank and agency staff, and colleagues undertaking extended roles.
•
Ensure all new staff receive a comprehensive induction and orientation to the department.
•
Act as mentor or preceptor, supporting the ongoing development and competency achievement of junior staff.
•
Participate in the planning and delivery of in‑service training, teaching sessions, and formal presentations as required.
•
Maintain personal professional development through study days, research, reflective practice, and engagement with innovation in perioperative care.
•
Support and participate in audit, quality improvement, and research projects aimed at enhancing clinical practice and patient outcomes.
•
Maintain full compliance with mandatory training, including safe use of medical devices, ensuring personal and team competencies remain current and aligned with Trust and regulatory standards.
•

•

Represent the department at multidisciplinary meetings as required, promoting effective interprofessional collaboration.

Undertake departmental projects relevant to the speciality, contributing to service development and improvement.
MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
•
Lead the day‑to‑day management of the operating room, ensuring efficient running of theatre lists and effective deployment of staff.
•
Provide clinical leadership, guidance, and support to the team, acting as a specialist practitioner and key point of contact for the surgical team and other departments.
•
Deputise for the Theatre Coordinator in their absence, ensuring continuity of safe and effective service delivery.
•
Oversee the maintenance, safe use, and appropriate allocation of equipment, ensuring faults are reported and resolved promptly.
•
Assist with stock control, ensuring adequate supplies, cost‑effective use of resources, and timely ordering of consumables.
•
Participate in the development and monitoring of quality standards, facilitating audit, risk management, and service evaluation activities.
•
Report potential or actual complaints, incidents, or risks to the Theatre Manager/Coordinator and contribute to investigations and learning processes.
•
Support the completion of annual risk assessments and ensure that identified actions are implemented.
•
Ensure compliance with Health and Safety at Work legislation and promote a culture of safety within the department.
•
Maintain effective communication with multidisciplinary teams to optimise patient flow and theatre utilisation.
•
Demonstrate flexibility in working hours to support the smooth running of the department and meet service needs.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
•
Welcome and support visitors to the department, ensuring professionalism and adherence to confidentiality.
•
Contribute to equipment procurement processes, including involvement in obsolescence planning and replacement programmes.
•
Undertake any other duties commensurate with the role and grade, as required to support safe and effective theatre services.
•
Demonstrate flexibility in working patterns to meet the needs of the service, including long days, weekends, and on‑call commitments.
•
