Summary

GMC internship

Manchester with some homeworking

The GMC will be running a six-week Internship Programme over the summer with a start date of 13 July 2026. Why not join us to see what it is like to have a career in one of the largest healthcare regulators in the UK?

The General Medical Council (GMC) regulates some of the most diverse professions in the UK. We work with doctors, physician associates (PAs), anaesthesia associates (AAs), those they care for and other stakeholders to support good, safe patient care across the UK. We set the standards doctors, PAs, AAs and their educators need to meet, and help them achieve them. If there are concerns these standards may not be met or that public confidence in doctors, PAs, or AAs may be at risk, we can investigate, and take action if needed.

Our organisation is built on fairness and trust - the trust of patients and the medical profession. We provide an inclusive working environment where everyone is valued and welcome new perspectives and ideas that you may bring. As it's important that we can relate to the people we serve, we are looking to attract a wider pool of talented, skilled and experienced people from different backgrounds to ensure we have a better understanding of the needs of our diverse registrants and the diversity of the communities across the UK.

We welcome applications from all individuals and particularly from an ethnic minority background, socially or economically disadvantaged background or have a disability as members of these groups are currently under-represented in GMC. All appointments will be based on merit.

You could be in your final two years at university in any degree subject (or equivalent) and have a real interest in developing your employability skills or understanding what it's like to work at a healthcare regulator. We just want to see that you have a real interest and enthusiasm to make a difference, can work in a team and with people at varying levels of ability and responsibility. Our aim is to find people with potential like you, helping you to grow and thrive and build a successful and rewarding career.

We have a range of opportunities available across the GMC. Our intern roles will be based in our Manchester office, and will be supported with some homeworking.

Finally, you can expect to be paid the UK (£13.45) Real Living Wage for your hours worked, and flexible working opportunities are available. You'll find a relaxed and friendly working environment. Your internship will be a great way to prepare for one of our roles in future.

The deadline for applications is Sunday 22 March at 23:59.

We will be running a virtual session on Tuesday 17 March 12pm for you to find out more about the GMC and the intern roles. This will also provide you with an opportunity to ask any questions. Please register your interest here.
