Summary
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Shift Manager to join our Team at Tarmac’s Cement Plant in Dunbar, Scotland.
The Shift Manager plays a critical role in managing the process plant and people from the raw material stores through to despatch. Ensuring that work is carried out in a safe and efficient manner and that the plant is operated in compliance with safety, environmental, planning and Company guidelines.
While this role will primarily work on a day shift, as the plant runs a 24-hour operation over the year, the role will require a degree of flexibility to ensure effective running of the plant. This may involve night working, weekend and Bank holidays and being on call if necessary. This role is key in ensuring that the plant runs with a consistent high level of safety, efficiency and complies with all regulatory requirements.
The role also involves creating and maintaining strong working relationships with stakeholders across the site and wider company. As the successful Shift Manager, you will report into the Production Manager and the role will have responsibility for line management of shift supervisors on site.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Safety
- Promote a safety-first culture
- Highest standards rigorously applied in accordance with CRH 16 Rules and legal requirements
- Organise regular toolbox talks and review isolation procedures on a routine basis
- Ensure risk assessments and methods statements are completed
- Perform regular Safety Leadership Interactions (SLIs)
Management, Leadership & Communication
- Manage 24/7 operations of the teams, ensuring that their work is carried out to the required standards with a high degree of productivity using safe working practices and procedures
- Foster a culture of teamwork within the production department and handle any employee relations situations appropriately and in line with Company policies and procedures
- Responsible for driving the annual performance cycle
- Ensure shift teams are appropriately covered during periods of absence
- Management of Production department contractors’
- Develop the team and drive improved job performance and satisfaction while attaining the production department objectives
- Propose suitable training programmes for operations personnel and ensure that approved training programmes are carried out
- Hold regular 1-1s with direct reports
Operational Excellence
Decreasing Costs
- Maintaining awareness of plant operating costs and consider these costs regularly in the decision-making process and industrial impact of their operations such as KPIs.
- Reducing variable costs by minimising disruption costs, power consumption and improving fuel economy
- Consistently promoting a continuous improvement culture
- Maintaining awareness of the automation system control strategy and make recommendations for continuous improvement
- Challenging Shift Managers on production cost control
- Manage Purchase Requisitions and Purchase Orders through SAP
Increasing Productivity & Reliability
- Coordinate all interventions in the case of breakdowns
- Co-ordinate plant resources to troubleshoot, inspect and maintain plant equipment as required, to meet production demands and prevent failures.
- Participate in RCAs by collecting and preparing data and information for discussion
- Liaising with engineering, process, and other technical functions to increase the reliability and performance of the major production assets
- Responsible for ensuring that the Production Inspector and Shift Teams are undertaking first level inspections and that inspection findings and results are recorded in SAP PM and corrective actions are taken.
- Make sure critical sensor issues are pointed out in the shift log and communicated.
- Ensure recurring faults are pointed out in cross-functional meetings and prioritised.
- Manages stocks of critical raw materials as delegated by the production manager including clinker, limestone, gypsum, tyres, PSP, SRF and Ammonia.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for Shift Manager will have demonstrable operational and leadership experience in a similar role and will be able to provide evidence of developing their team. They will be a flexible, self-motivated individual who possesses a positive attitude in their approach to work.
