The role
SSEN Transmission has an opportunity for a Principal Engineer - HVDC Cables to act as a recognised subject matter expert within our Network Engineering team.
The role provides technical leadership and assurance for HVDC cable systems (including converter station interfaces) across their full lifecycle, developing and governing standards, assuring designs, and technically approving HVDC cable assets deployed across the Transmission business.
Reporting to the Lead Principal Engineer - Cables, the role supports delivery of a significant and diverse portfolio of transmission works, shaping innovative HVDC technical solutions and representing SSEN Transmission within key industry forums, technical bodies and conferences.
You will

Write, maintain and technically own a comprehensive suite of specifications and guidance governing HVDC cable systems (land and subsea), exercising lifecycle accountability through critical review, assurance and continuous enhancement of standards, incorporating project delivery and operational feedback and the advancement of HVDC cable technologies.

As part of the Technical Authority, review test plans to ensure that all HVDC cable technology and equipment selected is adequately tested, proven and validated, and review proposed suppliers and manufacturing facilities to confirm their suitability for approval on the Transmission network.

Provide subject matter expert input to design reviews carried out by the Design Authority, offering specialist advice where required, verifying that project proposals are fit for purpose and identifying any technical or scope changes required.

Provide technical guidance and advice to the Transmission business for new HVDC cable systems and repairs/replacement strategies.

Lead the identification, evaluation and adoption of emerging and innovative HVDC cable technologies, installation techniques and materials to improve network performance, resilience and whole‑life value.

Represent SSEN Transmission at industry body events such as ENA, IEC or CIGRE working groups and attend relevant technical conferences.
You have

A degree in Electrical Engineering or another relevant engineering discipline, with Chartered Engineer status (or working towards chartership) with a relevant professional institution.

Demonstrable experience in the design, specification and testing of transmissionlevel HVDC cable systems, ideally spanning both subsea and land applications. Experience will ideally encompass 320 kV and 525 kV HVDC systems, including monopole and rigid bipole configurations, with or without metallic return (DMR).

Proven ability to technically assess issues, problems and/or faults associated with HVDC cables, supported by an indepth understanding of the requirements for design, installation, operation and maintenance of HVDC cable systems, including associated testing regimes.

A detailed knowledge of National Grid, British and European cable standards, with experience in writing technical specifications, guidance notes and work instructions for HVDC cables, cable laying and installation (land and/or subsea).

Direct experience in HVDC cable manufacturing, and/or experience in subsea and land HVDC cable system design, supply and installation, would be highly advantageous.
