TeacherActive is currently recruiting for a passionate and dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to work within a specialist SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) school based in Basildon. This is a temporary-to-permanent opportunity, offering the chance to become a permanent member of staff following a successful placement.
This role is ideal for an experienced HLTA or a strong teaching assistant ready to take the next step, supporting pupils who require additional emotional and behavioural support to engage with their learning.
The RoleAs an HLTA, you will play a key role in supporting teaching and learning across the school. You will work closely with teachers and pastoral staff to deliver targeted support, lead small group interventions, and occasionally cover lessons where required.
The students you will be supporting have SEMH needs, and some may have experienced difficulties within mainstream education. Building positive relationships and creating a safe, supportive learning environment will be essential.
Key Responsibilities•
Support teachers in delivering engaging and differentiated lessons
•
Lead small group and 1:1 interventions to support learning and behaviour
•
Provide classroom cover when required in the absence of a teacher
•
Help implement behaviour management strategies and support emotional regulation
•
Build strong, trusting relationships with students to encourage engagement
•
Work collaboratively with teaching staff and the wider pastoral team
The Ideal Candidate
•
HLTA qualification or significant experience in a similar role
•
Experience working with students with SEMH or behavioural needs
•
Strong classroom management and communication skills
•
Patient, resilient, and supportive approach to working with young people
•
Ability to build positive relationships and motivate disengaged learners
•
Experience within alternative provision or specialist settings is desirable
