Summary
GENERAL AIM • Doctors in General Practice are those approved by the Joint Committee of Training for General Practice or PMETB who give care to individuals irrespective of age, sex and illness. • They attend their patients in their consulting rooms, in their homes and sometimes in a clinic or hospital. • Their aim is to make early diagnosis. • They will include and integrate physical, psychological and social factors in their consideration about health and illness. • They will make an initial decision about every problem that is presented to them as a doctor. • They will undertake the continuing management of their patients with chronic recurrent and terminal illnesses. • Prolonged contact means that they will use repeated opportunities to gather information at a pace appropriate to each patient and build a relationship of trust which they can use professionally. • They will practice in co-operation with other colleagues and know how and when to intervene through treatment, prevention and education to promote the health of their patients and their families. • They will recognise that they also have a professional responsibility to the community. GENERAL OBJECTIVES • Practice a high standard of patient-centred, preventative, clinical medicine using evidence based practice wherever possible • Tolerate uncertainty • Understand the significance of ‘time’ in General Practice • Show good communication skills • Organise an efficient caring practice, being willing to learn and demonstrate management skills • Evaluate regularly and audit his/her own performance • Maintain interest in continuing medical education and develop a pattern of lifelong learning • Be aware of cost-effectiveness in relation to investigation and treatment to maximise the available resources for patients • Develop a solid understanding of medical ethics and be willing to integrate these within the practice culture • Develop an understanding of public health • Understand and show responsibility to the Primary Health Care Team
