As the largest Cellular Pathology department in the country, we’re looking for talented people to join our diverse teams on our Wythenshawe Hospital and Oxford Road Campus sites, where you may have the opportunity to work cross-site, offering exposure to specialist training and experiences for example, in Electron Microscopy, Ophthalmic Histopathology
Our laboratories have begun the implementation of SMART automation with the installation of the Sakura Tissue-Tek AutoTEC A120 automated embedding systems and Sakura Tissue-Tek Xpress X120, due for installation in 2023. This will ensure that we’re at the forefront of investing in new technologies to deliver and improve patient care. The service has an extensive Immunohistochemistry repertoire, including prognostic markers in Lung and Breast Cancer and Biomedical Scientist led scoring for breast markers, including DDISH and PDL1 for triple negative breast cancer.
As part of the Greater Manchester Pathology Network, the department are also working towards implementing digital imaging to support the Greater Manchester Strategy for Digital Pathology, with equipment due to be validated in the coming months.
As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, you’ll be experienced and operating as a Biomedical Scientist within Histopathology, in line with ISO 15189 standards and you’ll be rotated across the department, providing scientific services to patients and customers to aid pathological diagnosis.
You’ll deputise for senior team members and manage workflow, support with the management of documentation, and general overall performance.
You’ll also play a role in the training and development of scientific staff.
Opportunities to be trained to support dissection of skin specimens, with cross site support.
We support and encourage our Specialist Biomedical Scientists to undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities, which could be internal talks and seminars, as well as attending approved courses. We also have a dedicated Training Lead, supporting the Directorate strategy for training, as well as training officers within each department. The department has full HCPC training status for pre and post registration IBMS portfolios, and full ISO 15189 accreditation.

Annex 21 payscales
Duration
Salary Payable
(i) up to 12 months prior to completion of training:
75% of the top of the band
(ii) more than one but less than two years prior to completion of training:
70% of the top of the band
(iii) more than two but less than three years prior to completion of training:
65% of the top of the band
(iv) more than three years from completion of training:
60% of the top of the band
Starting pay for any trainee / apprentice must be no less than the rate of the main (adult) rate of the National Minimum Wage.
• Once the calculation has been agreed with the recruiting manager, the salary confirmation (% as per the earlier table) should be recorded on the conditional offer letter. The conditional offer letter should also stipulate the consequences of the training not being achieved within the allotted timescales if the qualification is an essential requirement of the role, as this could result in dismissal. This information should also be replicated in the contract of employment.
