BBS Recruitment is an independent recruitment agency for the public sector, supplying to a variety of clients across London, Hertfordshire, and surrounding areas. We are currently recruiting for an experienced Principal Planner to work for our client in Lambeth and surrounding areas.
Duties and Responsibilities of Principal Planner:
- To manage a wide range of planning applications, including adverts, simple householder extensions, Lawful Development Certificates, minor changes of use and conversions, listed building consent, and applications within conservation areas.
- To handle development control issues, negotiating with applicants, prospective developers, and internal council teams.
- To prepare reports and papers for committees and senior officers.
- To draft statements of evidence for written representation planning appeals and present evidence at informal hearings.
- To undertake public participation exercises on planning applications and development projects and analyse the results.
- To provide advice to applicants and the public on planning applications under the supervision of senior officers.
- To respond to queries by telephone, email, written correspondence, and face-to-face meetings.
- To attend public meetings and site visits, representing the Council professionally.
- To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of relevant planning legislation, policies, and procedures.
- To plan, programme, and prioritise own workload to meet deadlines, targets, and timetables.
- To work flexibly across multi-disciplinary teams and cross-organisational projects.
- To ensure compliance with Council and government policies, including Environmental Policy, Data Protection, Health & Safety, Sustainable Construction, and Race Equality Action Plans.
- To promote good race, ethnic, and community relations.
- To manage larger, complex changes of use, conversions, and modest new-build schemes, including negotiation of associated S106 agreements.
Working Hours:
35 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 09:00 – 17:30
Requirements for a Principal Planner:
- Proven experience in managing planning applications and development control issues.
- Experience of preparing reports, statements of evidence, and representing an organisation at meetings.
- Strong knowledge of planning legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to negotiate effectively with applicants, developers, and internal teams.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with experience of dealing with the public and stakeholders.
- Experience working within multi-disciplinary teams and across organisational boundaries.
