Location: Stevenage, SG1 2NY
Salary: Up to £100,000 per annum plus bonus and company car
Role Overview
A major construction programme is being delivered at a large research and development campus in Stevenage as part of a wider estate transformation strategy. The programme includes refit, restacking and enabling works across multiple buildings and will be delivered over a 3–5 year period.
The Construction Safety Manager (CSM) forms part of the Construction Technical Authority (CTA) and plays a key role in ensuring that construction projects are delivered safely, in compliance with organisational standards, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices.
The role provides construction safety oversight, coordination andtechnical guidance across all project phases, working closely with internal teams, contractors and consultants to ensure safe and compliant delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Construction Safety Oversight
- Monitor contractor compliance with EHS requirements through meetings, audits and inspections.
- Review and oversee Permit to Work (PTW) processes and site safety arrangements.
- Implement site-specific safety rules and contractor safety oversight plans.
Planning & Design Support
- Support constructability reviews and provide input into construction execution strategies.
- Identify potential safety or construction risks early in the project lifecycle.
- Provide input on permitting, regulatory requirements and safety planning.
Procurement & Contractor Management
- Contribute to procurement strategies ensuring safety requirements are embedded in contracts.
- Support contractor prequalification and evaluate contractor EHS systems and safety performance.
- Participate in bid evaluations and post-project reviews.
EHS Planning
- Support development and review of preliminary Construction Safety Plans.
- Define EHS responsibility boundaries across project stakeholders.
- Coordinate pre-construction EHS information with design teams.
Incident Management
- Support or lead incident investigations and root cause analysis where required.
- Track corrective actions and promote continuous safety improvement.
Project Close-Out
- Support safe handover of completed works.
- Ensure appropriate documentation and transfer of EHS responsibilities.
Person Specification
Education
- Degree (or equivalent) in Construction Management, Engineering, or Construction EHS.
Experience
- Experience managing safety on large-scale construction projects.
- Strong knowledge of construction safety regulations and industry standards.
- Experience working with multiple contractors in complex project environments.
- Background in audits, inspections and incident investigations.
Skills
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to coordinate across multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
