Summary
National Express is looking for a Compliance Engineer who cares deeply about safety, standards and doing things the right way. If you’re the kind of person who spots issues before they become problems, enjoys getting out on the road, and takes pride in holding high standards across multiple locations, this role puts you right at the heart of how we keep our passengers safe.
You’ll carry out audits, inspections and spot checks across owned operations and third‑party partners, making sure every vehicle, process and location meets the legal and company standards we’re known for. It’s a role with real influence — one where your judgement, clarity and professionalism directly protect our Operator’s Licence and our reputation.
This role is based at Miller Street or any National Express location, with regular travel expected.
What you’ll do
- Carry out audits and spot checks across owned depots.
- Identify shortfalls, provide clear guidance and follow up to ensure compliance is achieved.
- Review maintenance systems, quality procedures and engineering practices to ensure they meet statutory and company standards.
- Issue and manage non‑conformances where required.
- Conduct station and stop audits with the Service Delivery Team to ensure vehicles are presented correctly.
- Support investigations into incidents, accidents or compliance concerns.
- Represent the business at public inquiries.
- Use and improve IT systems to strengthen audit and reporting processes.
- Help maintain high engineering performance in line with KPIs and balanced scorecards.
What you’ll bring
- Strong understanding of legal and company engineering requirements.
- Experience in vehicle maintenance or working within an accredited quality system.
- Ability to carry out and document vehicle inspections to DVSA standards.
- Good communication and influencing skills.
- Good Microsoft Office skills and strong numeracy.
- Ability to work independently, travel regularly and stay away from home when needed.
- A logical, investigative approach and confidence producing clear reports.
- A full UK driving licence.
What you get for bringing your expertise
- Free bus and coach travel across the National Express network for you.
- Complimentary travel for your nominated person (or bus travel for your partner).
- Life assurance and a strong company pension.
- Access to our Employee Assistance Programme.
- A private online GP service for quick, stress‑free support.
We’re building an inclusive workplace that reflects the communities we serve, and we actively welcome applications from everyone. If you need any adjustments during the recruitment process, just let us know — we’ve got you.
A quick heads‑up: if we receive a high number of applications, we may close the advert early. If this role feels like your next step, now’s the time to jump in.
Things to Note...
At National Express, we are really proud of our health and safety record and as a result, we operate a Drugs and Alcohol Policy which is applicable to all employees.
As part of your initial assessment, we will complete Drug and Alcohol testing and you may be subject to random tests during your employment.
