Assessment Centre & Interview

  • A full assessment day including practical exercises, group tasks, and a technical or competency‑based interview with one of our hiring managers. Held in April at our Preston Head Office.

Role Overview

As a Graduate Civil Engineer, you will report to a Section Engineer, Senior Engineer or Project Manager. You will support engineering and site teams across all stages of project delivery, gaining hands‑on experience in construction, dimensional control, quality assurance, health and safety, and project coordination.

You will apply your academic knowledge to real‑world engineering challenges while building the expertise required to progress toward professional accreditation with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)

Key Responsibilities

Operations - General

  • Demonstrate strong time‑keeping and reliability, ensuring readiness for daily site activities.
  • Apply a proactive, inquisitive approach - ask questions, seek learning opportunities, and show enthusiasm for your development.
  • Work respectfully and collaboratively with all site team members, recognising their roles and responsibilities.
  • Follow and uphold The VolkerStevin Way and its core principles.
  • Support site engineering tasks including dimensional control, reading and interpreting drawings, carrying out instrument checks, and clearly communicating setting‑out information.
  • Contribute to quality management by assisting with sampling/testing, maintaining drawing registers, updating as‑built records, and escalating technical issues when required.

Project Controls, Contract Knowledge & Administration

  • Develop understanding of contract documents including the Form of Contract, Works Information, Specification and Drawings.
  • Maintain accurate records of labour, plant and materials, and support material reconciliation processes.
  • Complete daily site diaries with photographs to support project progress reviews.
  • Read and follow method statements; develop knowledge of Company HSEQ systems, COSHH requirements, PPE standards, and incident reporting processes.
  • Support the maintenance of site documentation, contribute to progress reviews, and assist with controlled document management.
  • Build understanding of the project programme, attend collaborative planning sessions, and follow project governance and administrative procedures.

About you

Required Qualifications / Expertise

  • A BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering (or a closely related discipline), accredited or progressing toward accreditation by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering principles gained through academic study, placements or project work.
  • Commitment to Continued Professional Development (CPD) and proactive engagement with professional growth.
  • Regular attendance and meaningful contribution to bi‑annual performance and development reviews with your line manager, HR and senior leadership.
