The Barts Heart Centre (BHC) is a new cardiovascular and thoracic unit formed by the amalgamation of St Bartholomew’s, The London Chest and The Heart hospitals. This is the largest unit in London and after further expansion in 2016 it will be one of the biggest specialist cardiovascular and thoracic hospitals in Europe. BHC will provide a full range of surgical interventions including all adult cardiac, adult congenital (GUCH) and minimally invasive thoracic procedures. Sub specialties in mitral valve repair, complex aortic surgery with stenting and the surgical management of heart failure will be developed over the coming months. This year we expect to do 2200 cardiac and 800 thoracic cases which will be achieved through 7 state of the art operating suites, 44 ITU beds (level 2/3) and 64 ward beds. A hybrid facility will become available later to facilitate complex endovascular procedures.
Aortic fellow (senior) to Aortovascular unit under Prof Oo.
The cardiac surgery unit runs with 25 registrars who will be part of 3 cardiac surgical firms consisting of 3/4 consultants. There will be 15 junior and 10 senior registrars, shared between the firms. The allocation to junior or senior tiers will be decided by the educational supervisors and based on the level of experience, motivation and communication skills. Trainees can be moved between the tiers depending on their performance.
The clinical work will consist of:
1. Operating Theatres – first assistant or primary operator under supervision.
2. Participation in the organisation of operating timetable and admissions.
3. Undertaking daily ward rounds in ITU/HDU and dedicated cardiothoracic wards.
4. Carrying out general ward work under the supervision of the consultant.
5. Assisting in the aortic outpatient clinics.
6. Participation in regular audit meetings, teaching sessions and research meetings.
7. Nights and weekend cover
