About the School
A specialist SEN School in East Sussex is looking for a dedicated Sixth Form Teaching Assistant to join their team from after Easter until the end of the academic year. If you're passionate about helping young people grow academically, socially, and personally, and you enjoy working with a high level of autonomy, this role could be an excellent fit. The setting supports students with dyslexia and other specific learning differences, so experience in this area is a strong advantage.
Staff work collaboratively, leadership is approachable and supportive, and the environment prioritises wellbeing, independence, and positive relationships. You'll be joining a team that values patience, empathy, and a student‑centred approach. If you enjoy a role where every day brings meaningful interactions and opportunities to make a difference, you'll feel right at home.
Your New Role
As a Sixth Form Teaching Assistant, you'll play a key role in helping students develop independence, confidence, and effective learning habits. This is a varied and hands‑on role that involves academic support, pastoral guidance, and practical help across different learning environments.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing tailored one‑to‑one and small‑group academic support to Sixth Form students across a range of subjects
- Supporting students during lessons, independent study sessions, and break times
- Encouraging positive engagement in learning and supporting students
- Supporting students in developing social skills, communication, and positive peer interactions
- Monitoring student engagement and adapting support strategies in line with individual learning plans
- Giving students constructive feedback to help build self-esteem and reinforce progress
- Working closely with teachers, tutors, and support staff across both sites to implement personalised support plans
- Recording progress, concerns, and achievements clearly and accurately using the school's systems
- Providing regular feedback to the Head of Sixth Form and contributing to review meetings and progress discussions
- Upholding safeguarding, behaviour, and wellbeing policies to maintain a safe and positive learning environment
- Accompanying students on educational visits and supporting them in navigating new environments confidently
This role is ideal for someone who is calm, patient, and passionate about helping young people develop independence and thrive both academically and personally. It suits someone who enjoys variety, can work with a high level of autonomy, and is confident supporting students in different settings.
What you will need to succeed
- Experience supporting young people in an educational, pastoral, or youth‑work setting
- An understanding of dyslexia or specific learning difficulties, or a strong willingness to learn
- A compassionate, patient, and encouraging approach
- Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills
- The ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with a wider team
- A proactive, flexible attitude and the confidence to support students across different learning environments
The ability to remain calm, positive, and solution‑focused when challenges arise
