This role is within our team who support people seeking asylum and refugees.
The post is funded by Cumberland Council, initially up to 31st March 2027.

Purpose of Job:
To work as part of the Asylum Seeker and Refugee support team, acting as Multicultural Cumbria’s primary contact for Ukrainians and other refugees needing accommodation in West Cumbria.
To assist Ukrainian refugees find new hosts or new accommodation.
To work with Cumberland Council’s Housing Officers to give information, advice and guidance in registering with Cumbria Choice.
To develop relationships with private landlords to create a network of sympathetic housing providers who may be able to provide accommodation to Ukrainians and other refugees.
To work to the principles of welcome, inclusion and equity, promoting the well-being of everyone - a culture of mutual support and good community cohesion
Main Duties:
To learn about and then support refugees register with and use Cumbria Choice
To engage with local landlords and lettings agencies and become familiar with their requirements for tenants.
Support Ukrainians and other refugees to apply for accommodation, including providing simple explanations to people where English is not their first language.
Work with Cumberland Council’s Housing Officers to solve issues on placing refugees in accommodation.
To ensure Ukrainians and other refugees understand their obligations as tenants
To maintain a register and case files of people assisted.
To learn about and contribute to our Asylum Seeker and Refugee Support Service and develop skills to enable Multicultural Cumbria to provide a flexible and responsive service
General Duties:
To promote community cohesion, inclusion and equity for all.
Attend meetings as necessary.
Represent Multicultural Cumbria and promote their ethos by working in a positive way.
Contribute to monitoring and reports.
Abide by all Multicultural Cumbria’s policies, including those around safeguarding, confidentiality and data protection.
Ensure that personal behavior demonstrates integrity, openness and honesty; and is anti-oppressive, non-judgmental and supports diversity.
Take responsibility for inputting and storing data, and compliance with GDPR.
It is the nature of the work that tasks and responsibilities are in many circumstances unpredictable and varied. Employees are therefore expected to work in a flexible way and tasks which are not specifically covered in their job description may have to be undertaken.
Person Specification
Experience and knowledge
Experience of supporting people from diverse backgrounds achieve their aims
An understanding of how people apply for rental properties and the responsibilities of tenants is desirable but not essential
Skills and abilities
Excellent verbal/written communication skills, especially when working with people for whom English is a second language
Ability to set/meet deadlines and prioritise tasks.
Ability to foster trust, manage conflict, and build relationships, both with individuals and organisations.
Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
Personal attributes
Enthusiastic, proactive, supportive and committed to personal development of individuals.
Adaptable to working outreach in different locations.
Available for flexible working hours, including evenings or weekends.
A car driver with a vehicle available for work is essential due to the rural nature of West Cumbria.
