Summary
Neway International are seeking six Gardeners to join our client based with Newport City Council.
Location: Telford Street, Newport, NP19 0ES
Hours: 37.5 hours per week (Monday–Friday, 8am–4pm)
Start Date: 7 April 2026
Duration: 26 weeks (6 months)
Pay Rates: PAYE: £13.26 per hour
Work Pattern: Monday–Friday, outdoor working across cemetery grounds
About the Client
Newport City Council’s Environment & Leisure service maintains public spaces across the city, ensuring high‑quality grounds maintenance, safe environments, and well‑kept green spaces. The Bereavement team oversees cemetery grounds, delivering respectful, professional, and consistent horticultural standards.
The Role
This is a seasonal grass‑cutting and grounds maintenance role based at St Woolos Cemetery. The Gardener will carry out a wide range of practical horticultural tasks to maintain cemetery grounds to the required specification. The role involves physical outdoor work in all weather conditions and requires a full UK driving licence.
Key Responsibilities
Carry out grass cutting, strimming, hedge trimming, leaf clearance, and litter removal
Plant bedding, shrubs, trees, and undertake pruning, division, and shrub‑bed maintenance
Support soft landscaping tasks including top‑soiling, cultivation, seeding, and bed renewal
Apply chemicals where required (if certificated)
Assist with setting out and marking sports facilities when needed
Operate and maintain horticultural machinery, vehicles, and small plant safely
Report defects in tools, vehicles, and equipment to the line manager
Follow all Health & Safety procedures, reporting incidents or hazards promptly
Work flexibly across sites within the city boundary
Candidate Requirements
NVQ Level 1 in Horticulture or minimum two years’ practical grounds maintenance experience
Full UK driving licence (essential)
Experience using mowing equipment, strimmers, and horticultural machinery
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and undertake physical tasks
Good communication skills and ability to work independently
Reliable, punctual, and able to meet deadlines
Willingness to undertake further training
Positive attitude, flexible approach, and willingness to support colleagues
Spraying certificate (desirable)
Knowledge of plant identification, disorders, and Health & Safety regulations (desirable)
