Job title: Research Fellow College: Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences Grade: 7 Reports to: Head of Research Direct reports: None but may manage small project teams Role purpose Carries out sample collection & research, laboratory reporting, and securing and directing small research projects. Research Fellow generic responsibilities Grade 7 Research,Knowledge Transferand Consultancy Leadssmall research or consultancy projects including setting theobjectivesof the project, leading theteamand managing the work of junior or temporary staff. Developsresearchobjectivesand proposals for own and collaborative research. Makesrecommendations to manager or project leader on e.g. development needs of the team, research design, the need for further research based on research outcomes. Writesliterature reviews toestablishthe latest research in the field. Collectsdata using a range of suitable techniques. Analysesprimary and secondary data gathered through a variety of methods. Publishesproject reports,research papersand journal articlesandpresent research outcomes to conferences / seminars. Continually update knowledge and understanding in field or specialism. Leadership and Management Leads small research project teams. Providestraining and development as necessary to temporary or junior staff working on research projects. Business Effectiveness Writesor inputsto project bids with colleagues including writing the detailed methods and techniques and rationale etc. Liaiseswith clients where unrealistic / changing expectations on deadlines or funding, involving manager as necessary to resolve. Researchesandidentifiesoptions for future projects or consultancyand generatessomefunding through research/KT/consultancy. Identifiespossible partnersor clients for consultancy and other sources of income through networking, assessing journals / publications to consider future research direction. Teaching and Learning Support May be involved in teaching onappropriate coursesand supporting research students e.g.: Leading seminar groups. Act as dissertation supervisor for UG and PG students. Part of Doctoral supervisory team. Provide service to students when involved in lecturing or supervision. Delivery Attendsappropriate internalmeetings e.g. project / team meetings to discuss operational issues, marketing of the Centre, progress with projects, etc. Attendsand playsan active role inappropriateUniversityor Faculty groups / committees on e.g. research ethics, approving research proposals. Contributesasrequiredto longer term planning for the Centre. Quality Consistent delivery of research, knowledge transfer and consultancyactivities to time,budgetand quality. Written reports, papers, and presentations to be of a high standard,appropriate forjournal submission, clientreportsand conferences. Presents own papers at conferences. Delivers refereed papers and/or significant professional publications. Able to work to at least national standingin terms of research outputs. Volume Writes(on own or jointly)a number ofjournal and conference paperseach year. Contribute or leads on research grant applications/bid writingeach year. Funding Identifiesfunding opportunities/bidsand generatessmall amountsof funding throughresearch/KT/consultancyprojects, young researcher awards, travel grants etc. Evidence of securing small scale research/KT/consultancyprojects. Contribution to authoring bids for projects and maybe responsible formanagement of specific research tasks/strands. External Standing Has an emerging academic profile, developing as an expert in a particular field orarea ofresearch. Evidence of standing from income generation and academic activities, typically with smaller organisations. Representsthe organisationat conferences andmeetingswith external partnersand clients. May be a journal revieweror assistant editor. Role Specific Responsibilities Plan and conduct laboratory-focussed research that guides the development of models of bowel cancer, using human tissue samples, immune cells and completely animal-free components. Co-ordinate the development of a programme of research with a human tissue focus within the legal and ethical framework of the Human Tissue Act. Co-ordinate with academic and non-academic partners in their research activities, including monitoring of clinical sample collection. Work with our funding partners to support, promote and develop public engagement strategies towards the adoption of human-specific pre-clinical models. Ensuring well maintained laboratory notes and development of high-quality journal and conference papers.
