Summary
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking a motivated and experienced Renal Phlebotomist to join the renal directorate at Hammersmith Hospital. The primary responsibility of the role is the collection of blood samples by venepuncture across renal wards and units, ensuring timely and accurate processing to support patient care and flow.
You will work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, using your initiative while having access to senior nursing support when required. The ideal candidate will have proven phlebotomy experience, strong communication skills and a compassionate approach to patient care. Flexibility to work across shift patterns is essential, along with strict adherence to Trust policies, including data protection and patient confidentiality standards.
The WLRTC network comprises four dedicated renal wards on the Hammersmith Hospital site, including Handfield Jones Ward, Peters Ward, Kerr Ward and John Humphrey Ward, which together provide a total of 63 beds. The service also includes an 18-bed renal day care unit, a Renal Rapid Assessment Unit operating from 9am to 5pm, six days a week for urgent admissions and ambulance cases.
The successful post holder will work effectively within a team of four, supporting the medical team by undertaking venepuncture and ensuring timely blood collection for renal patient s.
• To undertake phlebotomy procedures according to agreed protocol.
• To undertake cannulation procedures according to agreed protocol.
• Ensure that appropriate requisitions are completed accurately and that specimens are carefully packaged for transport to pathology.
• Have an understanding of the policies and procedures within the ward and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
• Have an understanding of the needs for universal precautions at all times and be aware of the infection control policy when equipment is used.
• Ensure effective and appropriate communication with staff, patients, relatives and visitors, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
• Assist with clerical duties on the ward when required including arranging patient transport services and outpatient appointments.
• Answer the telephone, respond to queries, take messages and deal with enquires referring to the RN when appropriate.
