Summary

We are excited to offer the opportunity to join the Heart team at the Yorkshire Heart Centre, in The General Infirmary at Leeds, as a Junior Clinical Fellow in Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. This is a fantastic opportunity for those desiring a sustained experience in cardiology and / or cardiac surgery at a large modern tertiary cardiac centre. It is intended that these posts can be tailored to meet training needs, including opportunities for trainees to become involved in research, quality improvement and procedural skills. The posts would be suitable for individuals who have completed foundation posts or equivalent or wish to evolve their experience (e.g. following core medical training) in order to prepare for higher speciality training programmes. The service is supported by a number of foundation doctors, internal medical and GP trainees as well as Advanced Care Practitioners. As well as time on the wards and on an on-call rota, this allows flexibility to tailor training, including experience in outpatient clinics, catheter lab time, operating theatre observation and cardiac imaging. It is intended that the successful applicant would be involved in audit and quality improvement projects, including the chance to collaborate with researchers to present and publish work. We will ensure that these posts receive dedicated clinical supervision with an experienced named supervisor, portfolio review, study leave and teaching programmes with evidence to count towards future training. This appointment will be based at the Yorkshire Heart Centre, Leeds General Infirmary, one of the largest and most modern tertiary cardiac centres in the UK, serving a population of over 3 million. There are 6 state of the art Cardiac Catheter laboratories, with over 2000 PCI procedures, including 24/7 primary PCI, over 900 invasive electrophysiology/cardiac ablation procedures and in excess of 700 implantable device procedures per annum, making the Yorkshire Heart Centre one of the highest volume units in the UK. The TAVI service is one of the largest in the UK. There are multiple tertiary services including inherited cardiac conditions, valves, heart muscle and adult congenital cardiology. The cardiac MRI service, adult congenital cardiology service, paediatric cardiology and interventional paediatric cardiology as well as adult and paediatric surgical services all complement each other within the same site. The inpatient department consists of three inpatient wards (including acute cardiology admissions and cardiac surgery), a day case interventional ward, a catheter laboratory suite and a 10 bed CCU. The adult Cardiac Surgery unit has the capacity to perform approximately 1000 open heart operations per year. It has two theatres, 12 ITU beds and one dedicated cardiac surgical ward.
