Summary
Staff Nurse Band 5 : To provide excellent nursing care by developing skills and competencies to care for critically ill patients. To act in a responsible manner, demonstrating respect and kindness to others, in accordance with the trust values.
General Intensive Care (GICU):
Busy 21 bedded ICU/HDU cares for approximately 1,400 emergency and elective patients a year from a diverse case mix, including a range of specialities; general / respiratory medicine, renal medicine and surgery, obstetrics, plastic surgery and trauma and orthopaedics. The unit has a strong research culture, encourages innovation and clinical excellence and values post reg experience in an acute setting.
Neuro Intensive Care (NICU):
Friendly, busy 17 bedded unit is the Regional Neuroscience’s Centre for South West Thames. Provides the unique experience of caring for patients following head and spinal trauma, along with those suffering from complex neurological disorders. This modern, well unit believes in the development of its staff.
Cardiothoracic Intensive Care (CTICU):
Fast paced 21 bedded tertiary referral unit cares for both emergency and elective patients from a broad range of specialties including cardio thoracic surgery, cardiology, vascular surgery and chest trauma. Seasonally we provide advanced respiratory care to medical patients requiring isolation. This spacious, modern unit promotes evidence based practice and prides itself on excellent inter professional collaboration.
Band 5 Critical Care Assessment Centre and interview day TBC, to recruit for our Band 5 Foundation Course. There is a set start date of Monday 13th April 2026.
Successful candidates will start on our inhouse Foundation Course- please note- A/L may be limited during your first three months as 100% attendance on the Foundation Course is mandatory. A/L not given when there are study days. Please only apply if you meet the criteria on the JD or you will not be shortlisted. You need to be available to start in April and have no A/L commitments.

You must have a strong desire to care for critically ill patients. We provide a three month supportive educational programme Foundation’s of Critical Care Nursing Course (FCCNC) at the beginning of your employment, to facilitate your development and clinical skills competency within intensive care.
Once completed there is the opportunity to undertake the University based Critical Care Course (Intensive Care), and to rotate to one or both of the other adult units. ED and Paediatric or Neonatal ICU or Critical Care Outreach Team (CCOT) to further develop your practice.
You must have a minimum of one year’s current nursing experience as a qualified nurse working in an acute care ward or department within our Trust. We do not take nurses as a first job from qualification.
