Summary

The post will be a part of the Acute/General Medicine ST3+ tier at Dorset County Hospital, taking a share of the on-call duties and gaining exposure to a wide range of medical conditions while being fully supported by a full resident and senior team. This will include full and equal access to educational and clinical supervision as well as internal educational and training opportunities and funded study leave. Access to an ePortfolio will be offered. The successful applicant will be offered the opportunity to gain experience in the specialty of their choice, on an inpatient, outpatient or procedure basis (subject to capacity in a few specialties). Where possible this will be aligned with the clinical service placement, although it should be emphasised that the elective sessions are not restricted to the area of medicine in which the post is located.

The role provides a core service purpose to support the safe delivery of care to the wards and acute unselected medical on-call rota. It is recognised that access to specialty training posts can be limited and prior experience can be valuable. Exposure to a specialty at registrar grade can help to clarify the level of interest in obtaining a training post and for some people the choice between specialties may not yet be fully formed. It is intended that the post gives reliable and structured access to the specialty/specialties of choice of the successful candidate. The exact nature and timing of these sessions will be dependent upon the candidate’s preferences and the opportunities within the system, moderated by the service requirements. The other sessions are aligned with the trust’s clinical service needs, which for some applicants may precisely match their specialty interest.

Provide core services to support the safe delivery of care to the wards and acute medical on-call rota. The candidate will be required to take part in the consultant led ward rounds, as well as, other daily ward duties specific to the ward area.

On-call duties will include liaising with GP colleagues with regards to unselected medical intake patients and those that are generated by the Emergency Department to ensure the appropriate, high quality delivery of care.
