The appointee will be within the General Surgery Clinical Directorate joining the team specialising in Endocrine Surgery and Emergency General Surgery. The directorate works in specialist teams (Emergency, Colorectal, Upper GI, Breast, Endocrine and Vascular) with a good deal of flexibility and excellent working relationships between teams.

The majority of your workload will be providing a high-quality elective Endocrine surgical service in partnership with the current Endocrine specialist. It is anticipated that you would continue to develop the endocrine provision both locally and in conjunction with our tertiary referral partners. You will also be part of the on-call emergency general surgical rota and contribute to the out of hours and weekend cover on a frequency of 1 in 12. You will also contribute to the day time cover (Mon- Fri) at a frequency of 1 in 8.

The successful candidate will be assigned a mentor. We are a very supportive and close-knit service with good relationships throughout. Whilst no formal arrangements exist for out of hours/weekend support, it is recognised that emergency surgery is a highly complex and sometimes very demanding field requiring expertise and guidance from other specialists. This is provided on an ad hoc basis by any and every consultant in the department who can be approached at any time to help in difficult situations as needed.

Planned AAC Interview Date is Thursday 19 March 2026.

Emergency Surgery almost exclusively happens at the Stoke Mandeville Hospital Site and covered Mon-Thu daytime by 4+2 consultants on a surgical floor with 3 wards. The surgical floor is shared with other surgical specialties and encompasses a surgical assessment unit, consulting rooms, minor ops room and future enhanced care beds. Emergency theatre provision is via 1-2 emergency theatres daily available to General Surgery. The service utilises an ambulatory emergency surgical service where possible with a daily emergency clinic and day case emergency surgery where possible.

Duties include the care of elective patients at both Wycombe Hospital and Stoke Mandeville Hospital. Wycombe Hospital hosts the Wycombe Elective Surgical Centre (WESC) is a regional elective surgical hub catering for the majority of elective surgery including paediatric and complex major surgery. There is some elective day-case surgery undertaken at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.Elective sessions include clinics, day case and inpatient elective surgery.

The trust is part of the Oxford deanery and is a teaching hospital for residents at all levels of the training programme. All consultants are expected to be clinical and education supervisors to our resident doctors.
