Summary
Do you thrive in a busy estates environment where detail, prioritisation and proactive thinking really matter?
About us
The Science Museum Group (SMG) is the largest and most complex museum estate in the country which also houses a scientific collection of international significance. The Estate Operations team has responsibility for ensuring that the SMG Estate meets all legislative and operational requirements, is consistently well maintained, efficiently run and delivers a high-quality customer experience to staff and visitors alike.
We are about to embark into a new period for the Science and Industry Museum site, that will see significant investment made which builds on the standout developments already completed and further conserves and expands on an incredible portfolio of building assets.
About the role
Engaging and delivering an efficient Estates service with great customer service, you will co-ordinate effective compliance focused site inspections with all relevant paperwork needed and financial administration within a busy department. Overall, this will be ensuring that our Estate operations align with best practice, meet the expectations of stakeholders and satisfy all relevant legislation and guidance.
This will include supporting the Estates Manager and Site Engineers in overseeing all contractor documentation and compliance including RAMS, procurement paperwork, contracts, permits, work orders, and job sheets. This will also involve conducting risk assessments, and management reporting of the museum's defect reporting system ensuring all requests are processed in a timely manner.
This is a full-time role working 35 hours per week on a permanent contract, based at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester. You will be working Monday to Friday, 3 days on site and 2 days from home.
About you
We're keen to hear from candidates with experience in a Facilities, Estates or Contractor Management role who are confident operating in a busy, service-led environment. You'll be highly organised and detail-focused, able to manage several systems and priorities while keeping compliance records, inspections and documentation (including RAMS) accurate and up to date.
We're looking for someone proactive who understands the operational impact of estates risks, for example, recognising how a lift outage affects safety, accessibility and events on site, and who can prioritise accordingly during busy periods. You'll be comfortable reviewing processes and suggesting improvements, managing quotations and financial administration, and coordinating contractors with a good understanding of health and safety practice. Clear communication skills are essential, as you'll liaise with a wide range of stakeholders including staff, volunteers, contractors and the public, ensuring stakeholder buy-in when works intersect with live environments or events.
A values-driven mindset and commitment to contributing to an open and inclusive organisation are important, and while qualifications such as IOSH, NEBOSH or a Level 3 Facilities Management certification would be advantageous, practical experience and sound judgement are what matter most.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
