Summary

We are seeking an experienced Band 7 Senior Mechanical Workshop Technician to join the Mechanical Workshop Service within Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

This is a senior specialist role providing technical support to direct patient care, clinical services and research activity across the Trust and wider King’s Health Partnership. The post holder will work with a high degree of autonomy, delivering complex, bespoke engineering solutions in a regulated healthcare environment.

The role combines traditional mechanical workshop engineering expertise with a key contribution to the development and expansion of in‑house 3D printing and advanced manufacturing services, ensuring that new technologies are safely and effectively integrated alongside established engineering techniques.

• Act as a lead on the design, development and manufacture of novel and complex medical devices, including patient‑specific equipment used in Radiotherapy and other clinical services.
• Undertake advanced repairs, servicing and modifications of medical and associated equipment to ensure safety, reliability and clinical fitness for purpose.
• Apply expert knowledge of traditional workshop engineering techniques, including conventional and CNC machining and fabrication, alongside modern manufacturing methods.
• Play a senior role in the development, validation and clinical use of in‑house 3D printing and additive manufacturing services.
• Work closely with clinicians, physicists and researchers to translate clinical and research requirements into safe, practical engineering solutions.
• Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 quality management systems and relevant medical device regulations.
• Provide technical leadership, specialist advice and mentoring to junior workshop staff.
• Contribute to service development, innovation and continuous improvement within the Mechanical Workshop Service.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust is one of the UK’s leading healthcare organisations, with a strong international reputation for clinical excellence, research and innovation.

The Mechanical Workshop Service forms part of Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering and provides specialist design, manufacturing and repair support to clinical services across both Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospital sites, as well as to King’s College London.

The service operates from 2 well‑equipped engineering workshops with advanced CAD facilities, a wide range of conventional mechanical workshop equipment and 3D printing and scanning technology. The team works closely with multidisciplinary clinical and scientific colleagues, supporting patient care, innovation and service quality in a highly regulated environment.

The post holder will act as a senior specialist mechanical workshop technician, providing expert mechanical engineering support to clinical services, Medical Physics & Clinical Engineering teams and research groups across the Trust and King's Health Partnership.

They will take responsibility for the design and manufacture of complex bespoke devices, including those used directly in-patient treatments, applying advanced technical judgement to ensure safety, usability and regulatory compliance.

The post holder will have advanced skills and extensive experience in traditional workshop techniques, including the use of conventional lathes, milling machines, and other workshop equipment within a healthcare environment.

A key aspect of the role is contributing to the development of in‑house manufacturing capability, particularly the appropriate expansion of 3D printing and additive manufacturing services. The post holder will ensure that additive manufacturing techniques are used where they add value, while maintaining the essential role of traditional workshop engineering skills in delivering robust, reliable clinical solutions.

The role includes working under formal quality management systems, maintaining technical documentation and supporting audits and governance activity. The post holder will provide leadership and mentoring within the workshop, contribute to service planning and prioritisation, and support innovation and continuous improvement across the service.
