Summary
Neway International are seeking a Governance / Project Officer to join our client, Barnet Council, within the Assurance & Public Protection Directorate.
Location: Colindale
Hours: 36 per week
Duration: 3 months, then extended after review
Start Date: 10 March 2026
Rates: PAYE: £20.92 per hour Umbrella/Ltd: £27.28 per hour
Work Pattern:
Tuesday: Hendon Town Hall
Thursday: Colindale
Remaining days: Working from home
About the Client
Barnet Council’s Governance Service supports the delivery of transparent, compliant and effective democratic processes. The team provides strategic governance support, manages statutory reporting, and ensures the Council meets its obligations in relation to elections, committees, and corporate governance.
The Role
The Governance / Project Officer will provide direct support to the Head of Governance in the lead‑up to the Local Elections in May 2026. The role involves delivering project support across several governance workstreams, including Members’ Enquiries, Next Administration Planning, governance arrangements for Council companies and trusts, and the commissioning of a replacement Town Hall audio‑visual system.
You will be responsible for progressing defined project tasks, drafting policy documents and reports, undertaking best‑practice reviews, and preparing training materials for councillors and officers. The role also includes supporting the drafting of the Annual Governance Statement.
Key Responsibilities
Provide project support across governance workstreams in preparation for the 2026 Local Election.
Assist with reviews of Members’ Enquiries processes and Next Administration Planning.
Support the commissioning and project oversight of the replacement Town Hall audio‑visual system.
Contribute to governance arrangements for Council companies, trusts and charities.
Undertake best‑practice reviews and produce policy documents, reports and briefing materials.
Progress defined project workstreams and deliverables to agreed timelines.
Prepare draft training materials for councillors and officers.
Support the drafting and development of the Annual Governance Statement.
Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders to ensure effective governance processes.
Candidate Requirements
Experience in governance, project support or a similar administrative role.
Strong written communication skills with the ability to draft reports, policies and training materials.
Ability to manage multiple workstreams and deliver to deadlines.
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
Confident in undertaking research and best‑practice reviews.
Professional, proactive and able to work in a politically sensitive environment.
