A Band 2 Healthcare Assistant supports registered nurses and other healthcare professionals with basic patient care. It’s an entry‑level clinical role focused on hands‑on support, patient comfort, and maintaining a safe care environment.
Direct Patient Care
• Assisting patients withpersonal care: washing, dressing, toileting, oral hygiene.
• Helping withmobility: repositioning, using hoists, walking assistance.
• Supportingnutrition and hydration: serving meals, helping patients eat and drink, monitoring intake.
Clinical Support
• Making beds, includingoccupied bed changes.
• Maintaining cleanliness and infection control standards.
• Restocking equipment and ensuring clinical areas are tidy.
• Escorting patients to appointments or departments.
Communication
• Reporting changes in a patient’s condition to nurses.
• Providing reassurance, emotional support, and clear communication to patients and families.
• Documenting care activities according to Trust policy.

Skills & Qualities Needed• Compassion and patience
• Good communication
• Basic literacy and numeracy
• Ability to follow instructions and work in a team
• Respect for confidentiality and dignity
• Physical stamina for a busy clinical environment

Training & Requirements• No formal qualifications required, thoughCare Certificateis usually completed after starting.
• Some Trusts prefer experience in care settings (care homes, domiciliary care).
• Mandatory training includes:
• Infection control
• Manual handling
• Basic life support
• Safeguarding
• Fire safety
