As a key leader within our distribution operation, the Distribution Support Manager will work alongside the Lead Distribution Manager to ensure the safe, compliant and efficient running of the fleet. With primary responsibility for night and weekend operations in our 24/7 environment, you’ll play a vital role in delivering a high‑quality service for customers across the Midlands Super Hub and the wider national linehaul network. You’ll collaborate closely with operational stakeholders, supporting the effective use of our Yard Management Solution and other technical systems to keep the yard running smoothly and safely. Leading a team of 6–8 Traffic Office Managers, you’ll provide direction and support to teams accountable for around 250 drivers, helping to drive improvements across the distribution scorecard and ensuring operational excellence at every step.
What you’ll be doing
In this pivotal role, you will lead safe and compliant operations, taking responsibility for the site’s O’ Licence and ensuring all activity meets legal, regulatory and internal standards. You’ll oversee the effective use and compliance of VOC and distribution management systems, ensuring operational processes run smoothly and efficiently.
A key part of your success will be the relationships you build. You’ll work closely with colleagues across pipeline, planning, fleet, assets and union partners, collaborating to deliver high‑quality service and operational excellence. You’ll use KPIs, balanced scorecards and performance insights to identify gaps and drive continuous improvement across the site.
People leadership is at the heart of the role. You’ll coach, support and develop your team of TOMs, ensuring strong performance management, regular 1:1s and clear personal development plans. You’ll also lead employee engagement activity and help maintain a positive IR/ER climate, working closely with CWU representatives.
You will be responsible for overseeing HR processes such as conduct and attendance, ensuring consistency and fairness. Alongside this, you’ll lead business plan delivery, coordinate peak‑period planning and manage special-event resourcing to ensure the site is ready for increased demand. Finally, you’ll maintain full control of the Yard Management System, ensuring a safe, efficient and well‑organised yard environment.
