About the RoleWe are recruiting on behalf of a drug and alcohol recovery service in Tower Hamlets for a Recovery Support Worker to join their culturally sensitive support team. This service plays a vital role in supporting individuals from diverse communities, particularly Bangladeshi and Somali service users, through their recovery journey using a harm reduction approach.This is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by providing practical, emotional, and motivational support to people affected by substance misuse. You'll work closely with service users to build trust, promote independence, and empower them to make positive changes in their lives.
Key Responsibilities
Direct Support & Caseload ManagementProvide one‑to‑one support, motivational interventions, and structured sessions.Conduct assessments and contribute to person‑centred support plans and risk assessments.Facilitate group work focused on relapse prevention, life skills, and pathways to education, training, or employment.Offer practical advice on substance misuse, including understanding substitute medications (e.g., methadone, buprenorphine).Liaise with GPs, prescribing services, housing providers, mental health teams, and other agencies to ensure coordinated care.Advocate for service users and support them in accessing essential services.Work collaboratively with community groups to ensure the service remains culturally sensitive and accessible, particularly for Bengali and Somali speaking communities.
What skills and experience you need to have:
Experience supporting individuals affected by substance misuse, mental health issues, homelessness.Understanding of substitute medications and harm reduction principles.Ability to speak Bengali and/or Somali is essential.Understanding of cultural norms, stigma, and barriers faced by Bangladeshi and Somali communities in relation to addiction.Knowledge of safeguarding procedures.Strong communication skills (written and verbal), including the ability to build rapport and facilitate groups.Ability to motivate and empower service users.Competent IT skills Ability to de‑escalate challenging situations calmly and professionally.Willingness to work flexibly, including occasional evenings or weekends.
