The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) is seeking a Staff Officer – Technical Service. As the operational arm of the MCA, HM Coastguard delivers six critical missions: Search and Rescue, Pollution Response, Vessel Traffic Management, Maritime Safety, Maritime Security, and Emergency and Disaster Management.
The Technical Services team plays a vital role in ensuring the reliability and advancement of the systems that underpin these missions. Working closely with operational managers, Information Technology (IT) specialists, and international partners, the team provides expert guidance, develops future system requirements, and ensures compliance with national and international standards. This is an opportunity to influence technology that supports life-saving operations and maritime safety across the UK and beyond.

As a Staff Officer - Technical Services, you will lead the delivery and oversight of Coastguard technical systems that support six critical missions, including Search and Rescue and Maritime Safety. You’ll provide expert advice, develop future system requirements, ensure compliance with international standards, and represent the UK in high-level forums. This role combines technical leadership with strategic influence, shaping the technology that underpins life-saving operations.
Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:
Oversee and monitor Coastguard technical systems to ensure high-quality operational delivery.Provide expert technical advice and guidance to senior managers and stakeholders.Lead the development of user requirements and manage user acceptance testing for new systems.Act as senior user and business change manager during system implementation projects.Ensure compliance with national and international maritime regulations and standards.Represent the UK as a subject matter expert in national and international working groups.Identify and recommend improvements through performance reviews and emerging technologies.Collaborate with IT and procurement teams to manage service level agreements and system performance.Great line management is important to us as an organisation, and we will equip and support line managers to develop the skills they need.
