Ready to impact a better future?As the Technical Manager in the Devonport Senior Leadership team, you’ll lead a technical function that keeps our fleet safe, compliant, and ready to deliver. Your work will directly support critical military maritime operations that protect national capability and contribute to UK Defence.
You’ll provide trusted technical knowledge across HMNB Devonport, leading technical teams, ensuring compliance with regulations, and maintaining high vessel availability. Your expertise will help create impactful solutions that support our customer, strengthen operational performance, and enable continuous improvement across the contract, with an occasional travel requirement.
What you’ll do as a Technical ManagerYou’ll be empowered to:
- Lead and develop the technical team, ensuring colleagues are motivated, supported, and clear on their objectives.
- Manage Devonport fleet technical operations, ensuring compliance with Serco policies, Integrated Management System (IMS) standards, International Safety Management (ISM) requirements, and regulatory bodies.
- Oversee vessel maintenance, certification, survey status, refit planning, and utilisation of computerised planned maintenance systems.
- Hold responsibility for the technical budget, ensuring effective financial control and value for money.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with the customer, regulatory authorities, suppliers, contractors, and internal stakeholders to support safe and efficient operations.
Does this sound like you?You’ll be a great fit for this role if you have:
- Class I Certificate of Competency, a relevant Degree, or extensive engineering experience in the marine industry.
- Demonstratable shore-side experience of technical management, including knowledge of port and vessel operations and regulatory frameworks.
- Strong understanding of ISM, ISO 9001 and ISO 14000, and computerised planned maintenance systems such as MAXIMO (desirable)
- Proven leadership experience with the ability to develop colleagues and promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
- Commercial awareness and experience managing budgets, forecasting, and achieving cost efficiencies.
Vetting and checks:This role requires Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance, which involves verifying your identity, employment history, nationality, and criminal record to meet government security standards. In addition, depending on the nature of the role, you may need to obtain formal Security Clearance (such as CTC or SC), which includes more detailed background checks on employment, criminal record, and financial history to ensure suitability for working in secure environments. Please note that UK residency requirements may apply for certain levels of clearance. You will also complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire so we can identify and provide any support you may need to undertake the role effectively.
