Working hours: 40 Hours (5 days per week)

Location: Cygnet Hospital Kidsgrove, Boathorse Rd, Kidsgrove, Stoke-on-Trent ST7 4JA

Responsible to: Matthew Allen (Highly Specialist Occupational Therapist)

Summary of the site: Cygnet Hospital Kidsgrove is our new hospital for women in Staffordshire. The service is now open and accepting referrals. There are two wards at the hospital; a 20 bed Acute service for women and an 11 bed Highly Specialised Personality Disorder Rehabilitation service.

We are currently looking for an Occupational Therapy Assistant to join our team at Cygnet Hospital Kidsgrove. This post holder would work within the Occupational Therapy team and multi-disciplinary team based on one of two wards at site. Cygnet Hospital Kidsgrove is a 31 bed service encompassing Crocus ward, an acute mental healthward, and Burleigh ward a highly specialist personality disorder service.

This role will be based on Burleigh ward. Burleigh Ward is Cygnet Hospital Kidsgrove’s 11 bed highly specialised service providing assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for women with personality disorder and complex needs.

Rehabilitation is provided in a therapeutic setting, with a level of security matched to individual need. The aim of the treatment, rehabilitation and re-socialisation programme is to equip the women in our care with the skills and confidence they need to navigate challenges that may come with returning to community or independent living.

In this role you will:

  • Deliver planned activities for patients under the direction of the ward Occupational Therapist (OT) and Multidisciplinary Team
  • Assist the OT in the day to day duties and running of the department
  • Develop and run a meaningful therapy timetable
  • Undertake assessment and intervention programmes with clients as delegated by a senior occupational therapist underpinned by appropriate experience / knowledge
  • Contribute ideas, create and facilitate events and activities safely and support people to structure their time through meaningful activity
  • Have involvement in the delivery of one to one and group interventions
  • Implement individual care plans during activity sessions and take into account specific interests and opportunities to promote choice and independence

The Occupational Therapy Assistant role involves planning and implementing therapeutic activities appropriate to the needs, choices and interests of individuals in our care, under the supervision and guidance of a qualified Occupational Therapist. The Occupational Therapy Assistant will also be working with the in-house MDT which is designed to support the individual in our care throughout their journey with us.

The team consists of nurses, psychologists, psychology assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, social workers and psychiatrists as well as 24/7 support from the nursing team. This means that we are able to meet the changing needs of our service users as they progress through their care pathway, while ensuring their safety is maintained and their independence supported.
