Summary


This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the UK’s leading Major Trauma Centres as a Consultant Trauma & General Surgeon, based at St Mary’s Hospital, the hub of the North West London Trauma Network. The post holder will support the Major Trauma Director in the delivery and ongoing development of a high-performing major trauma service and provide expert clinical leadership in the assessment and treatment of severely injured patients.

The role combines a central commitment to major trauma with participation in emergency and elective general surgery, offering a varied and rewarding consultant portfolio within a large academic health science centre. The post holder will work within a multidisciplinary team of nationally and internationally recognised clinicians and will be supported by mentorship from senior trauma surgeons.

The post holder will provide consultant-level care for patients with major trauma and acute general surgical conditions, including acting as Trauma Team Leader and providing damage control surgery to the chest, abdomen, pelvis and vascular systems.

They will contribute to the delivery of Consultant of the Week models for major trauma and general surgery, participate in on-call rotas, and provide daily consultant ward rounds during on-call periods.

The role includes developing and leading high-quality clinical services, supervising and training junior doctors, contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate education, and participating in clinical governance, audit, research and service improvement.




The post holder will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues, support strategic service development, and contribute to business planning and performance management within the Trauma and General Surgery directorates.

The Consultant Trauma & General Surgeon will provide high-quality care to patients in Major Trauma and General Surgery, maintaining GMC specialist registration and the competencies required for independent consultant practice.

Clinical duties include leading the assessment and management of severely injured patients, delivering damage control surgery, managing emergency and elective general surgical patients, and ensuring prompt attendance at agreed Direct Clinical Care programmed activities.

The post holder will contribute to teaching and training of medical students, trainees and other healthcare professionals, act as an educational supervisor as delegated, and support research and innovation in line with Trust and academic priorities.

They will participate in clinical audit, incident reporting, governance activities and service improvement, and work with clinical and managerial colleagues to optimise quality, safety, efficiency and patient experience.
