Summary

1. BACKGROUND Leeds Children's Hospital is offering a Programme Pause (OOPP) positions in Paediatric Gastroenterology. OOPP positions allow trainees to take a step out of formal training for one year and have any competencies gained whilst out of training assessed upon their return. Leeds Childrens Hospital is offering a fantastic opportunity, starting in September 2026. Paediatric gastroenterology Leeds Childrens Hospital provides a regional Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition service and tertiary care to North and West Yorkshire. The department provides expertise in the management of Inflammatory Bowel disease (IBD) (looking after approx. 300 patients), coeliac disease, intestinal failure (IF) (being one of the first established IF centres in the country, looking for 23 home PN patients), enteral tube fed patients (around 2000 patients), chronic constipation and dysmotility, functional GI disorders, eosinophilic GI disorders and GI problems in children with neurodisability. This department also offers extensive diagnostic investigations for patients, including endoscopy, colonoscopy and pH studies. 2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST As a part of these exciting and unique roles, successful post holder will have following clinical responsibilities Paediatric Gastroenterology The post holder will be involved in the day-to-day management of inpatients, review of day case patients and attend outpatients clinics. They will have responsibilities along with the other junior doctors in organising the weekly multidisciplinary meetings and present cases. There will be opportunities to further their training in practical procedures such as endoscopy and colonoscopy. The weekly ward timetable includes close supervision by consultants and several opportunities for clinical teaching. The post-holder would be expected to participate in medical audit and research projects. The post holder will be expected to do on calls in general paediatrics or specialities, so around 60-65% of the time will be within the Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition speciality. Teaching The post holder will have the opportunity to become involved with departmental, hospital and regional teaching programmes. Research The post holder will have the opportunity to become involved with departmental research programmes. Governance: The postholder will participate in departmental governance activities, including audit, service evaluation and risk management On call: Out of hours cover will be for the general paediatric or speciality rota. The post is for a 12-month period and is available from September 2026. 3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST 3.1 General Training and Qualifications Duration 12 months This post is aimed for trainees that want to come into the speciality for 12 months before applying for GRID training in Paediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition or to use it to gain SPIN competencies. There is the possibility for OOP position to be pre-approved as part of the GRID training program if the candidate is in the adequate year of training and fulfil the criteria to apply for GRID. The applicant should have MBBCh and MRCPCH or equivalent. 3.2 Experience The successful applicant should be able to work at ST4-7 level including evidence of having competence on a tier 2 rota, or to be able to demonstrate equivalent level experience. The successful applicant will have both inpatient and outpatient duties They will need to be confident in the assessment of sick children They will need experience of working in a multidisciplinary team and have excellent verbal and written communication skills They will need to have a good understanding of research methodology and be able to supervise and support clinical assessments as part of a research study. They will need to have, or be prepared to undertake, good clinical practice (GCP) training. 3.3 Personal Attributes The appointee will have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communications about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
